"Half of my house is nearly 100 years old, and this is where the kitchen is located. I wanted to keep with the style of the era, but also get some modern updates for functionality. Cory and his team did an outstanding job. From the initial CAD drawings to the end of job tweaking and everything in between, they went above and beyond my expectations. The quality of construction and expert installation (Thank you Tommy!) on a custom job in an old home was not a simple task, but these guys give great attention to and care about the details which show up in the end result. The project was done on time. Cory had an immediate interest in hearing and understanding what I was asking for. His good and timely communication was also very appreciated. Quality workmanship. I will definitely hire again."

"We had Garden Structures & More add onto the beautiful privacy fence they had previously built for us, and we couldn't be happier with the final result. Our new and improved fence is even better than we had envisioned due to owner/designer/craftsman Hal's excellent ideas. All work was completed in a timely and professional manner. We truly enjoyed working with Hal and wouldn't hesitate to have him do our next home project. "

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Labor plays a significant role in the installation of butcher block countertops. Depending on who you hire, your location, the customization level of the project, and whether the wood is already finished, you may pay a professional between $10 and $150 per square foot to install a butcher block countertop. On average, expect the per-hour price to run between $60 and $100.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

Landscape timbers can last 10 to 20 years in the ground when installed correctly. Pressure-treated timbers will last longer than non-treated ones, as pressure treatment makes the wood more rot-resistant. Wood exposed to high moisture levels or extreme temperature and weather fluctuations may not last as long as wood in drier areas with more consistent weather.

It is not recommended to cut or drill into LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beams. As major structural components of a home, their composite structure can be compromised by alterations, which can weaken them and lead to cracking over time. If you must make modifications to an LVL beam, it is crucial to consult a structural engineer or general contractor first. A professional can advise on whether it's safe and provide specifics on the appropriate bit size, depth, and directionality for any necessary drilling.

Floor joists provide support and stability to the flooring installed above them, whether it be hardwood, tile, or carpet. They’re essentially horizontal beams that hold up the subfloor and everything that lies on top of it. Floor joists also help evenly distribute weight across their structure so that it’s shared between walls, beams, and your foundation.
