We specialize in landscape design and landscape construction, as well as custom outdoor woodworking. A majority of the work we do is general landsaping including patios, retaining walls, and plantings. Unlike many other small landscaping companies, owner Ryan Davis has a degree in horticulture, 11 years of experience with many of the best in the Rochester area and has been a Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Assoc. (MNLA) certified professional since 2007. Ryan also has experience in other construction trades including sheet metal fabrication/installation, cabinetry and trim. While the business focuses primarily on landscaping, Ryan has the tools, knowledge, and experience that goes above and beyond most other landscapers.

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

Yes, and in many cases, you should. Large gravel works best as a base layer because it improves drainage and keeps the surface stable. A top layer of smaller gravel fills in gaps and creates a smoother, more compacted surface. This combination is common in driveways and high-traffic areas where both stability and comfort matter.

Yes, rotting leaves can be good for your soil. The decaying leaves release nutrients into the soil that can boost the health of your plants, and the organic matter also helps improve airflow and water drainage.

Since you’ll likely be digging a trench to install your yard drainage system, this is a good time to complete other tasks that involve digging up your yard, including: Sprinkler system installation Lawn reseeding Regrading your yard Redesigning your landscaping If your drain is under a walkway or driveway, your contractor must also remove those materials. This is a great time to consider upgrading your hardscaping features, especially if they’re nearing the end of their life span.

Mulching any time of year can be beneficial, so you can choose based on your preference. Most homeowners avoid the winter and summer because of the uncomfortable temperatures, so spring and fall are often best. Try not to mulch right before heavy rainfall or a big storm is expected, as wind and runoff can move newly laid mulch around and make more work for you.

If you have a large area of brush and vegetation to clear, forestry mulching may be the best option. This method works well for relatively flat areas that don’t have many large rocks or mature trees to clear. Forestry mulching is a relatively quick process that improves soil health, reduces fire risk, and leaves behind usable mulch.
