"These guys are awesome. I was called back within 15 min from posting on homeadvisor that my A/C was pushing out hot air. They were at my house in Lewiston in about an hour. They had it repaired and juiced up with free-on within an hour. I also asked for a quote on a new furnace/ac and was presented with a quote within 2 days, unlike Gilchrest who never got back to me with a quote and a year later when I asked Gilchrest for the quote, I was told that his van was in the shop and he didn't know when he would be able to come by to give me a quote. Never heard from him again. I would recommend Apex to anyone who has HVAC issues, very happy with their service!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to add Freon to your AC unit yourself, it is not recommended. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) prohibits the handling of Freon without a license. Freon is a dangerous gas that can cause irreversible damage to your AC or yourself if not installed correctly. It is worthwhile to hire a professional to add Freon to your AC.

Choosing between a ductless mini-split and central AC depends on your specific needs. Ductless mini-splits are ideal for targeted cooling, providing zoned comfort and energy efficiency. They are perfect for smaller spaces or homes lacking ductwork. In contrast, central AC offers consistent cooling throughout the entire house but requires ductwork and may be less energy-efficient for smaller spaces.

Consider factors like budget, home size, and cooling preferences to make the right choice. Combining both systems, with a ductless mini-split in specific areas, can also be a viable solution for tailored comfort and overall efficiency.

Yes. Getting a whole-house dehumidifier can help you save money on energy bills. How? Your home automatically feels cooler when there’s less humidity in the air (“It’s the humidity that gets ya!” is such a true statement). This means that you won’t need to run your AC as much as you would if you had all that extra humidity in your home.

To lower humidity quickly, run a dehumidifier or your home's air conditioner or turn on exhaust fans to extract moisture. These methods can quickly and effectively bring your home's humidity levels to a comfortable condition. However, you should consistently practice humidity-reducing tasks to maintain proper indoor humidity levels.

If you don't clean your AC evaporator coils, dirt and debris will build up, which impairs the system's ability to transfer heat. This forces the unit to work harder, leading to inefficient performance, higher energy bills, and frequent breakdowns. Over time, neglected coils can corrode, which may cause refrigerant leaks, or develop mold, ice buildup, and a clogged condensate drain, resulting in poor air quality and an uncomfortable home.
