I make cabinets. They are very solid. Custom cabinets are not the cheapest way to go but they are the best. My family has been making cabinets for three generations. I'm teaching my children now.

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

The main difference is size: a butler's pantry is much larger than a typical walk-in pantry. They are both primarily used for storage, however. Traditional butlers’ pantries also had private food prep and cleanup areas—complete with a sink, microwave, refrigerator, wine fridge, and countertop prep space. But, many newer walk-in pantries include the same items that make up a butler’s pantry.

If your cabinets don’t reach the ceiling, you can extend them higher, adding visual interest, privacy, and storage space to your kitchen. Depending on the height of your ceiling, you may want to extend the structure of the cabinets and install longer doors to make each individual cabinet taller, or you could add additional cabinets above the existing ones. Either option is cheaper and easier than installing entirely new cabinets.

There are a few items that will make organizing and reorganizing your cabinets a breeze. Invest in some:

  • Rollout shelves

  • Drawer organizers

  • Bins to house cereal, pasta, and other pantry items

  • Lazy Susans for spices

We also advise hanging your pots and pans from the wall or ceiling to save valuable cabinet space. If this sounds daunting, hire a local professional organizer to get things in order.

When it comes to cabinet hardware rules, there aren’t any. Let your personal style and budget be your guide. You can mix and match hardware or use all one kind; the choice is yours. But if you could use some overall guidance, many homeowners like to use knobs on doors and pulls on drawers.

The ⅓ rule for cabinet hardware refers to selecting the best-sized pulls for your cabinets. Look for hardware with a length of about ⅓ the height of the door and ⅓ the width of the drawer.
