While you can install siding yourself, it’s a time-consuming and complicated process. The clapboard exposure, also called the reveal, refers to the amount of clapboard visible in the siding. Clapboards always overlap slightly, but some overlap more than others. The exposure is the vertical measurement of the board that remains visible as the clapboard is installed.

When repairing clapboard siding, it’s important that you match the exposure of your current clapboards. You may want to take a measurement of the specific exposure on your siding for reference in repairs.

Similar to other types of wood siding consisting of natural materials, cedar siding should last 20 to 40 years. However, the lifespan for any wood siding, including cedar, can be far shorter without the proper repair and maintenance work. Don’t put off making repairs, or problems could worsen quickly. While you can repair minor holes and cracks in the siding shakes, rot and warping requires replacing the boards. 

For the materials alone, a square of siding costs an average of $600, but prices can range from $100 to $3,000, depending on the material. Vinyl siding costs toward the lower end of that range, while real brick or stone siding costs closer to the higher end. Keep in mind that many boxes of siding contain two squares, enough to cover 200 square feet, so you may need to double your cost if you only need one square.
