"If you’re looking for a pro to help you with mold issues, I can’t recommend SGS enough. When I discovered the toxic effects mold was having on my health, I couldn’t believe it. I researched and did my homework to understand mold and how to effectively remediate. I was shocked to find that I knew more than most “mold restoration” companies out there and how unregulated it is in Michigan. I sought out true professionals and that’s how I found SGS. They know their stuff, go above and beyond, communicate effectively and efficiently, take the necessary steps, and have helped us through home inspections and remediation support. I wouldn’t trust anyone else. SGS services were higher in cost but that’s because they actually do what is needed to remediate the problem and not make the problem worse like many companies do (which end up costing more in the long run and have health consequences). I’m so grateful that SGS does what they do!"

"We recently used Pure Maintanence for mold testing in our basement. They were super responsive and respectful of our short timeline. We had a super small project and their methods of mold remediation didn't end up making sense for us but they worked with us to make that decision instead of pushing us for something we didn't need. Would recommend for larger projects or testing."

"I was very nervous about possibly buying an older home. Marc was very thorough with his inspection. He answered all my questions and was very patient as I had many! He took the time to show me how to test the functionality of items in the home. He was able to give me cost estimates and put in order items of most importance. And told me the only item he would be concerned about if he was buying, and also took a sample and gave me the info for a place to have it tested! I would Highly Recommend Marc for your home inspection. Very professional and personable!"

"Scott was awesome. He came out right away. The lab report showed a mold issue and a few days later he came out to fog the entire house. Upon completion the second lab report showed the house all clear. Thanks Scott. We can breathe easier knowing we donâ t have mold."

"Kase did our new home inspection as well as the well/septic for the home we were selling. He was on time, professional and extremely pleasant to work with. When the VA needed some additional documents for our mortgage he got them right over to us (same day). And the owner and office manager were always friendly too. I would hire this company again and again."

Mold Testing and Remediation questions, answered by experts

Removing mold yourself can be dangerous. Always wear protective gear to cover your skin, face, and eyes, and wear a respiratory mask to protect your lungs. It is most recommended to only remove small areas of mold on your own and leave large mold growth to professionals. Mold growth can also be persistent. Without addressing the root cause, DIY surface cleaning can be ineffective and temporary.

Pellet stoves burn compressed wood byproducts, making them very efficient and clean-burning. However, even efficient combustion still produces fine dust particles, which could have an effect on the health of vulnerable people in your household, such as infants and people with asthma. A wood stove pro can help determine whether the levels in your home are unsafe.

A stain from a water leak will usually be brown and concentrated in a single area where the water is originating from. You may find it under a damaged section of roof, under an upstairs bathroom, or beneath your HVAC system. Stains from condensation are more likely to be widespread since they don’t come from a single point of water intrusion. Condensation stains also look blotchy and may smell musty, and they won’t be concentrated in a single area on your ceiling.

The spread of wood rot results in a physical breakdown of the wood’s cellulose and lignin, causing it to become spongy or brittle. This can lead to structural damage. Water won’t damage the physical structure of the wood, while mold can eat away at the material and cause structural damage over a much longer timeframe. When further considering water damage versus mold versus wood rot, all three issues can create a musty or damp odor in the area. All three can also cause discoloration of the wood.

If the smell is closer to mildew or rotten eggs, the issue is probably mold or bacteria buildup in the machine or its drainage system. Clean your washing machine thoroughly, paying close attention to the rubber door gasket, as it can harbor odor-causing residue. Some machines have lint or debris filters that should also be checked and cleaned according to the user manual's instructions. Be sure to leave the machine's door or lid open after each use, as this allows for better air circulation and helps prevent mold growth.
