Sage was recommended to me by a neighbor and I immediately looked them up on Angie's List. I saw that they were 'A' rated, a Super Service Award winner (2014) and had 3 nominations for POH. What could go wrong? Well, a lot could go wrong.
I contacted Sage roofing and we set a time to come out and inspect the roof the next day. They arrived on schedule, inspected the roof and said there was some damage and to contact my insurance company (State Farm). The claims adjuster came out and met with the roofer and it was agreed that the roof should be replaced.
Sage came as scheduled a few days later and replaced the roof. During the roofing job, the roofer noted that the flashing and chimney cap should be replaced and contacted State Farm with a request for additional funds to replace these items. State Farm declined without further comment. The new roof, without flashing or chimney cap, was done in one day. The roof looked great, and they cleaned up well.
We had a few moderately heavy rains over the next few months with no visible problems. But the winter was quite cold and there were several days of snow and drizzle with freezing and thawing temps.
Heavy rains began in late April. After one heavy rain, I noticed water leaking in around the chimney. I called Sage in early May, spoke to JT Lopez, Project Manager, and Sage had a roofer come out on May 7th. The roofer said he had fixed the problem (a small nail hole in the flashing). It rained again that night and the leak was still there, about the same as before. I called Sage back the following day, May 8th.
JT Lopez (the Project Manager) came out the next day, May 9, He inspected the roof and said we needed to fix the problem before both the leak and the interior damage became worse. He said that a roofer would be back later that day to make repairs as needed. We agreed that the leak was a priority and that the interior damage would wait until after we were sure that the roof was no longer leaking. (This agreement seems to have been forgotten completely, see below.)
The roofer never came out. I waited until May 12th and then started calling Sage, but my calls all went to voicemail. Over the next 8 days, I left several messages for them to PLEASE call me back. They never did.
I finally got JT on the phone on May 20th. He said that I needed to call his manager, Clay, in the home office. I called the home office, spoke with the manager and it was not a pleasant conversation. It started out pleasant enough, but then he started giving me reasons why I would have to pay for new flashing and any repairs for interior damage caused by the leak. First, it was because it had been months with no problems since they replaced the roof. (Note: They say they give a lifetime guarantee.) Then it was because the insurance company didn't include flashing, pipe jacks, or chimney cap in their estimate.
The conversation concluded with the understanding that JT and a different roofer would be out and re-examine the .problem area and we would go from there. They never showed up.
Adding to the stress of all this is the fact that I had the room (where the leak is damaging the ceiling and wall) completely remodeled 17 months ago. This included repairs, painting, and a new ceiling. During this remodeling, I had an old leak repaired along the chimney. This involved replacing the cricket behind the chimney to stop water from ponding, which was the source of the old leak. There were no leaks after this cricket was installed.
Sage also advertises a ?Referral Incentive?. I was told by Sage Sales Manager, Taylor Voskuil, that this was $400 for referring Sage to another homeowner, payable after the referred new job was completed. After my new roof was finished and everything looked good, I recommended Sage to my next door neighbor. This neighbor subsequently contracted Sage to replace their roof in February (or March). I have been promised the referral by both JT and the Sage Sales Manager on three different occasions, all prior to the current problem at hand. I never received anything, not even a ?thank you?. Additionally, another neighbor who initially recommended Sage to me was never given his referral incentive (also $400, promised by Taylor). I now assume that this ?Referral Incentive? is disingenuous.

His wife provided me with suggestions for getting through the winter as well as checking with others that were capable and reliable that Carl would be comfortable referring me to. They referred me to Kevin Lupo, who did an outstanding job. Everything worked out as expected. I explained my expectations in terms of protecting the roof and making sure that no debris or residual materials were left on the roof. Kevin and I agreed on a price range, and we scheduled the work. In that, Kevin was very flexible allowing for my work schedule so I was able to be there while he was working. Kevin and his assistant were there and working without any need for supervision on my part -- which was good because I needed to be working while I was there. And they were done on time as expected. This goes to demonstrate the high-caliber character and work ethic of Carl, at Advanced Quality Chimney. Once again, great people know great people and the fact that Carl referred me to Kevin proves that point. I am 100% certain that I would have been taken care of just as well or better (if that's even possible!) if Carl had been able to do the work himself. I would refer anyone to Carl (or Kevin) at anytime for chimney work. In winter 07-08 furnace malfunctioned, wouldn't start automatically and had to be reset manually to get through the night. We had 5 HVAC professionals, including Climatron, inspect the furnace. The first HVAC firm came and inspected furnace. He looked at soot visible at vent and saw the soot at the furnace water drain and the orange flame and said we'd have to replace the system. He advised that we go back to Climatron and Lennox and seek help from them as the furnace was only 7 years old. I contacted Climatron and explained the problem and pointed out that the exhaust vent from the furnace was visibly full of soot and dripping water and that the flame was burning orange. Climatron sent a technician out. He proceeded to dismantle furnace and exposed the soot covered part. He called Lennox company to discuss with service agent. They basically said tough luck, if we wanted to clean furnace it likely would cost nearly as much as replacing it and would likely not function properly. Climatron charged me $220 for the service call and while the service technician waited, sent a sales manager to our house to give an estimate for replacing the system. We then asked three other HVAC professionals to inspect system and advise us. They agreed that the furnace needed to be replaced and were all surprised that neither Lennox or Climatron offered any help financially to offset the costs. We decided that we'd prefer not to engage Climatron's services and would contract with a local HVAC firm. Prior to removing old furnace, the installer checked the gas pressure at the furnace. It was lower than specs called for (9.5 vs 10.0 inches column/H2O). In addition, the horizontal portion of the auxiliary vent fan was not level and held water. More problematic was the discovery that the horizontal portion of the exhaust vent from the furnace was sagging for several feet before exiting the wall and held enough considerable water. All of this piping had to be removed and the wall was capped. The vent was redone vertically straight up from the furnace. The water heater also was malfunctioning. The installer thought the exhaust runs were too long and not providing adequate capacity for ventilation. The exhaust vent was redone vertically and the water heater now works perfectly. We informed Climatron of the problems we uncovered. They responded that their \"job supervisor checked over the installation and found no problems\". And that \"Antrim County mechanical Department inspected the installation and approved the final inspection\". (department was dismantled and taken over by State of Michigan shortly after!). We much money undoing Climatron's work. Their written response to my complaint was to point out that their sales rep came at no charge and that their bill for diagnosis was justified. They argued poor maintenance was the problem. I feel both Lennox and Climatron acted unprofessionally and irresponsibly."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/mi/traverse-city/climatron--b-f-s-i-reviews-478098.htm"},"position":4}]}

Did a great job. He lays down drop cloths from the home entrance to the wood stove to keep the house clean. He gives a report on the condition of the chimney. He is prompt and professional. We've used him for 3 years and will continue to do so.

"Just okay. Very responsive in coming out to give me a quote, but I didn't hear from them after the job was sold - I had to call their office three days later to find out when they were coming. I then got a text from the salesman saying they'd be out at the end of the following week, much later than I'd wanted them there since the birds had begun nesting in the soffit again. Also expensive - about $500 for a job that took literally 15 minutes - about $80 of that was for the plastic cap they put over the soffit. Not a lot of companies do birds, though, so I went with this one."

FAQs for chimney cap service projects in Honor, MI
Chimney caps may be installed by a few different professionals, including a chimney sweep or a mason that specializes in fireplaces and chimneys. A gas fireplace technician is the best person to install a chimney cap on a gas log fireplace vent to be sure the cap is appropriate for the application.
A chimney cap costs about $300 on average. The prices range from about $75 to $1,000, depending on the material, size, any repairs needed, and if your chimney cap requires custom fabrication. Chimney caps are usually made from galvanized steel, copper, or stainless steel. Additional costs may include hiring a chimney sweep to clean the chimney before a cap is installed.
Help reduce energy bills by helping regulate your home’s temperature
Typically, a chimney cap will last from three to 25 years. This wide range is due to variables like climate, the material the cap is made from, and how often you use your fireplace. Regular inspections and maintenance can help extend the life of your chimney cap.
The best style of chimney cap for a brick chimney is one that fits tightly around the brick top of the chimney. The cap should have a screen to fully enclose it to keep animals out. The best materials include stainless steel, copper, or aluminum that fit tightly or are custom fabricated for a perfect fit on your chimney.
