"They started as soon as it was light enough to work. A crew of around 8 that never slowed down. The roof was totally stripped in a couple of hours. They worked both sides of the roof at the same time. They seem to instinctively know how to keep the applicators supplied with roofing panels. Whenever things were caught up, there was no idle time. Cleaning up all the roof stripping and sweeping the area with a magnetic roller whenever there was any down time. Everyone seemed to work constantly, and the progress was amazing. I had my roof done 10 years ago and it took the crew for [Provider Name Removed] 10 days to finish mine. I don't usually follow through on writing a review but these guys are the real deal. They are finishing up this morning and it looks great. Keep them in mind if you are looking to upgrade. Rick [Consumer Name Removed]"

Siding questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of siding ranges from 20 to over 100 years, depending heavily on the material, climate, quality of installation, and maintenance.

  • Vinyl, Wood, and Aluminum: Typically last 20 to 40 years. Engineered wood may need replacement after just 20 years.

  • Fiber Cement: Lasts around 50 years.

  • Brick and Stone: These are the most durable, lasting for a century or more with proper care.

The longevity of any siding can be shortened if it's not properly maintained or if damage is not repaired promptly. Regular cleaning is vital. It's time for a replacement when you see widespread damage, signs of water intrusion, or a spike in energy costs.

Although horizontal siding is found on more homes and deemed more popular, vertical siding is gaining popularity and becoming more trendy. Its ability to make homes appear taller and modern design is making it a favorite among homeowners. Plus, the vast style options available make it suitable for various architecture types.

Generally speaking, the thicker the siding, the higher the quality. Thicker siding provides a stronger resistance against extreme weather conditions. Thicker siding also tends to fade more slowly under the sun. Hardie boards, a popular fiber cement siding option, is usually 5/16 inches thick. Meanwhile, masonry-finished cement siding varies from 5/8 to 5/8 inches thick.

Different types of siding provide unique aesthetic and structural features, with each material commanding its own cost. Availability of materials and shipping costs also factors largely into the cost. The common types of siding materials include:

  • Stucco: $7–$9 per square foot

  • Wood: $1–$15 per square foot

  • Engineered wood: $1–$6 per square foot

  • Aluminum: $3–$6 per square foot

  • Fiber cement: $5–$14 per square foot

  • Brick: $10–$20 per square foot

  • Brick veneer: $3–$10 per square foot

  • Stone: $7–$30 per square foot

  • Stone veneer: $5–$11 per square foot

The best siding to cover brick is vinyl or metal siding. Vinyl is low maintenance and affordable, while metal is highly durable and offers some of the best insulation on top of brick. Fiber cement is another great option. Though you can install wood siding on top of brick, it’s not as ideal.
