They have a good reputation for having things in stock. That is the key. They don't have enough people when you need advice.

The installation itself was okay, but I had issues with the communication with Home Depot. We had to constantly call to remind them to order the windows; I was not happy with how hard it was to contact them. We agreed on everything 8/1 but the installation didn't happen until a month later; it took a whole month for them to get their act together. The guy actually came a day late because he was having truck problems. I did not like that they smoked without asking permission. The reason we went with them is because they have flexibility with payment.

Carpet Installation

They send their estimator over to check out the floor to be covered. I had originally wanted bamboo, but they had a moisture reading which indicated it would not do well in that space. Plan B was to choose a carpet and have them install the carpet. Apparently carpet with an insulated pad is not negatively impacted by moisture. They measured the space, gave me an estimate and scheduled a time three weeks away when the carpet would arrive to have it installed. The installer was professional and efficient. He installed transition strips on the floors where the carpet stopped or the next room began. Because the liquid nails for the strips had to dry, it took 2 days. Otherwise, it would have been a one day installation. It makes a huge difference in the space. The floor is comfortable as a recreation room for the kids, and is wonderful to walk on. A year later it still looks like new.

Carpet Installation

It will be hard to convey just how bad of an experience this was, but here goes. We needed new carpet for our basement, approx 13x60. We went into Home Depot and picked out our carpeting. The salesman rang us up and told us that we would get a call within three days to schedule the measurement. This was on a Wednesday. The following Friday I had not heard from anyone, so I called the carpet company(i.e. the subcontractor). They had never heard of my order. I went in to Home Depot and found that they hadn't placed the order. They placed the order. I wait another week without hearing from anyone. I call the subcontractor and they see that they do indeed have my order, so they schedule a time to measure. I stay home from work awaiting the 12noon-4pm arrival. He arrives at 4:30pm. The measurement takes 30min and he tells me they will call when the carpet comes into the warehouse 1week. Two weeks later I haven't heard from anyone, so I call. The subcontractor says the carpet will be another week. A week later they call to tell me the carpet is in. We schedule an installation for a week later. I stay home from work again and they arrive at 12:30 for a 8am-12noon window(you may begin to notice a pattern). They attempt to install the carpet, but find that they measured(or cut, I am not sure)incorrectly and are 8 inches too short, with no spare material to patch things up. So they haul all of the carpet away, reorder more and tell me they'll call when in comes into the warehouse. Two weeks later they call to schedule another installation for a week later. I take another day off from work and wait all morning for the to show up. They never show up. I get a call from the foreman who apologetically tells me that they can't get to the carpet because it is locked inside of the warehouse, and they do not have a key(I never figured this part out). They tell me that they will come the next day. They do come the next morning and install the carpet. It looks nice, and I am temporarily pacified untill...I find that the nail strips on the side and stairs were installed incorrectly. I discover this when my wife walks up the stairs without shoes and screams and falls to the floor with blood coming through her socks. At this point I went to Home Depot and talked with the store manager. Since the carpet had to be torn up anyhow, he agreed to replace it with better carpeting. The entire affair took over two months. The store manager admitted that they were having lots of trouble with several of their subcontractors. In essence, the system of large stores hiring subcontractors is flawed. As much as I love Home Depot in general, I will never use them for any kind of service work ever again.

We purchased new granite countertops for our small kitchen, to replace older Formica countertops. Our existing cabinets were in decent shape except for one peninsula area, so we purchased new matching cabinets for the peninsula and replaced counters throughout. Home Depot had a lot of choices for different types of granite, but it turned out the one we liked the most happened to be the least expensive. We measured the area ourselves and worked with the kitchen rep at the store who used a computer program to map out the area and give us a depiction of how the new cabinets and counters would look. After signing the agreement, they sent someone out to make an exact template, and two weeks later they came and installed the new countertops. They look great and we were very happy with both the price and the quality of installation. We would definitely use them again.

Sales guy spent a lot of time with us. We visiting the store at least 3 times and every time the same gentleman happened to be there. He spent as much time as we needed answering questions and looking up information for us. We ended up buying it online at HomeDepot.com because for some odd reason the online price was slightly less expensive than the in-store price.

IT WAS AN INCONSISTENT SERVICE FROM THE BEGINNING. THEY SENT TO THE INSTALLER THE WRONG PIECE OF PAPER. THE INSTALLER ONLY CAME PREPARED TO DO THE KITCHEN (LESS THAN HALF THE JOB), AND THEN WAS GOING TO CHARGE ANOTHER $200 (UNQUOTED) ADDITIONAL FOR PREP.
