The owner responded quickly, showed up on time, and gave us a quick estimate on the spot. In the conversation about the job he strayed off-topic, expressing his personal opionions and beliefs and also (unasked) sharing details about his personal life. I just ignored this -- I was on my lunch hour and kept steering the conversation back to the work requirements -- but this may be a problem for some people. I had to ask him to give me a written quote and also verify his insurance coverage, and he was very good about this, returning the same afternoon with the paperwork. The crew did a great job on the install of the roof, and cleaned up afterwards leaving the premises as they found it. I had a question about one aspect of the job when it was done, so the owner's son and an assistant drove back over to inspect the area later that evening and answered my question. It turned out to be nothing, but I was impressed with the good service. We went through the winter with no leaks and the roof looks great. I am very happy with this firm and would hightly recommend them.

Dick was polite, efficient, prompt, and professional. He is very knowledgeable about his work and is able to discuss this with the customer. When he found work that had been done poorly he never disparaged the other company, he simply said what needed to be done and why. When we decided to do further work with him and have him install the gutters it went well. His son and crew worked efficiently and quickly. Dick called us back quickly with any questions. I would work with again.

Owner of company was quick to respond to our request for a quote (much better than most of the other contractors we contacted). Although the other reports on Angie's List are correct in that he does like to talk quite a bit, he seemed to know his business and was very proactive in getting the job - without being overly aggressive. His quoted price was in the middle of the other quotes we got and based on that + recommendations from Angie's List, we hired him. Although job was not done quite as quickly as promised (perhaps due to weather delays), work was done in a timely manner and completed within 3 days. Clean-up was not quite as thorough as I would have liked -- small scraps of roofing, paper, and nails left behind -- they did do a good job of protecting by shrubs and majority of trash was removed.

Dick Tolan returned our first call very promptly and came early the next morning to estimate. A week later the work was done extremely well and our long-standing chimney leak seems to have been solved. The carpentry work on the overhang was quite complex and very well done.

Dick returned by call very promptly and came over to provide an estimate. Originally we were only planning on getting the roof work done but Dick gave us a great quote for adding the siding as well. Work started very promptly. Dick and his crew did all the work in a couple of days. They were all very professional, especially considering it was freezing outside. We were very happy with all the work.

The skylight was repaired and sealed properly (unlike the first company that didn't). They did some additional sealing around the area of the skylight as well which we were very thankful/grateful for. The new, secure back was door was installed & rear stairs built/completed. We were very pleased with the outcome. We worked with Dave Tolan for the most part but both him and the crew were pleasant, professional, punctual and completed the work as they described and within the quote. They were terrific. If they are available, we'd like to hire them again in the early fall to install a new basement door. Now that we've found a great guy/company, we're going to use them for any additional work that needs to be done.

The owner of Tolan Roofing was a veteran. He was a hard worker. He was a good talker. If he sat in your chair, you had to be very prepared. He was very entertaining also. We could tell that he had a heart of gold; he had one heart that was three sizes larger than most. He gave us a very fair estimate. He even went up and nailed something that was askew, while he was doing the estimate. A group of shingles had slid around and was hanging on one nail and he fixed it. He measured everything and discussed the different types of roofing available. He recommended the place where the rubber was needed. We had got several estimates from others as well. So, we were aware that he knew what he was talking about. He also thought of looking for vent holes from previous work on our roof. He said that he would charge us additionally for it, only if needed. He was very clear and very specific. He indeed blew the other 3 estimates. He did a really solid job. He took a little longer taking the dumpster out of the driveway because it was raining badly. He couldn’t move it to another place until he was ready to start that particular job. We weren’t inconvenienced at all by having the dumpster there. He didn’t let his guys work in the rain and he was just very solid. He did an excellent job.

The roofing crew arrived on time and started work immediately. The entire crew worked diligently. Tarps, ladders and ladder jacks were installed quickly and removal of the back section of roofing began within an hour of starting. After the old roofing was removed and installation was started, we discovered a slight mis-communication between the salesman (owner of the company) and the on site foreman. The situation was quickly resolved by a review of the contract. The back half of the roof was completed by early afternoon of the first day and cleanup was completed. Over the weekend I examined the roof and discovered a few relatively minor nit picks which I discussed with the foreman when the crew started work on Monday morning. The front side of the roof is more complicated, with 2 valleys, and is a little larger, so it took until mid afternoon to complete. Again, cleanup was thorough. The dumpster was removed the next day and the area under and around the dumpster was cleaned. They had more than enough of all the expensive tools to keep everyone working. Plenty of nail guns, removal tools, rakes, shovels, barrels, ladders, staging, the works. I was surprised that they didn't seem to have enough utility knives, hammers and squares to go around. Additionally, all of the trim and fascia boards were cut with either a small table saw with no guide or with a circular saw. Making sure the crew had adequate small hand tools and supplying a decent miter saw would go a long way toward presenting a much more professional appearance. As far as quality issues, there are several courses of shingles mostly on the back side of the roof, that are not acceptably straight. Additionally, I am not convinced that the ridge vent and cap shingles were installed completely in accordance with the manufacturers specifications. Overall the roof installation went well and I do not anticipate any problems with it over the course of its lifetime.

Dick Tolan was very responsive about coming to give an estimate and it was very reasonable. I was concerned that the flat roof above the front porch was going to collapse because of all the recent snow so he and his son came out on a freezing Saturday night and propped it up just to ease my mind before they could do the work. They did a very good job - I wasn't home but my neighbor who is an engineer said they were thorough and professional. I paid right away which Dick was very grateful for. When I called him a few days later about a shovel that I couldn't locate after the job had been done, he was very kind about trying to locate it even offering to lend me his own! As it turned out, I hadn't seen it around side the house in the dark. He and his son really do care.

Overall things went very well. The price was right in the middle of the five estimates I received. The crew arrived on time on the start date. They were very considerate and listened to my concerns about damage to plantings and house. They do work a rather short work day (approximately 6 - 7 hrs) so the job did take a bit longer than anticipated.

He couldn't seem to concentrate on examining the roof, and, completely unprompted, talked a lot about his religious opinions. Out of the blue, he made an anti-Semitic remark, then asked me what my religion was. I did not answer. He continued to make anti-Semitic comments. I am Jewish. Dick gave me a proposal of $500 for the repair, and I escorted him out of my house. I don't know if he does good work. As a Jew, I cannot do business with an anti-Semite, and I did not hire him.

Great, professional, saw what needed to be done and did it, for way less than other quotes-didn't try to sell us a new roof. I mean, we have SLATE. It just needed repair by someone who knew what they were doing.

Everything went as I was told. They were done in 4 hours and did a great job.

Roof no longer leaks, but felt that was overcharged. They described what they would do which I thought was a fair price, and once started, did something different that was not. Satisfied in the work, just thought should have adjusted their price. They did less than one hour of work. Communications could be better.

A tree fell on our roof during a wind storm. American Discount Roofing and Siding was quick to respond to our inquiry, provided an accurate estimate and were professional during the repair job. They also were careful to protect our landscaping. After the job was completed, they gave honest advice regarding other landscaping and roofing issues.

Called the son who returned my call 3 days later. He subsequently came out to the house. Pleasant fellow and we were not sure whether we wanted single or 2 level deck. He drew some pretty primitive diagrams. I knew from Angie's List that the father is the design person so I requested the father to come out to the house for design consultation. The son said no problem, the father was on vacation but he would call by next week. Never heard from the son or the father. Got somebody else to design and rebuild the deck. What rude people.

Dick visited to provide a quote. He measured the roof and gave me a quote on the spot. His quote was very fair. I had two other quotes. Dick's was the lowest. It was about $2200 less than the most expensive and about $700 less than the next. Since Dick had positive feedback on Angie's and his quote was very fair, I signed the work order right on the spot. He scheduled the roof for the following week. He had an opening that he wanted to fill. The dumpster and he and his crew arrived just as he had described. He had a crew of 6. They completed the job in one day. By the time I returned from work that evening, the roof was done and the work site had been well cleaned. Since he and his crew completed the work we've had a couple of thundershowers and I'm happy to report my new roof looks great and is watertight. I'm very happy I decided to go with Dick and his team. I definitely recommend them.

We had a leak in an interior bathroom wall, not related to the shower or sink. Eventually we realized it got wet when it rained. We called Dick, who had done a minor repair of the vent out of the roof 18 months before when he was at our house to put a new roof over our family room. He did not charge us for the minor repair and said he could not guarantee the leak would cease. It did however for over a year. When it started again we called Dick again. He came out and said he could fix the ice dam in the area but was still unsure that would solve the problem. He looked under the roof and found an elbow pipe was cracked and we needed a plumber to fix it. He repaired ice dam on the roof. He seemed very honest and helpful. The original ice dam problem in our family room has been completely resolved since he put on the rubber roof 18 months ago.

Mr. Tolan came to the house promptly and inspected the damage both inside the house and outside the house. Gave an estimate of the work to be done. He and his employees came back later that day and shoveled the snow and ice from the roof. Began putting on the new roof in sections. It took almost a week for him to complete the work because of holidays and inclement weather. He and his staff were very prompt and thorough. Cleaned up as best they could when finished.

This was a fantastic experience! I obtained several quotes for the job, and Dick Tolan's was the second most reasonable. I was planning to go with the least expensive one (also recommended on Angie's List), but Dick stopped by in-person and offered to match that price! He began the job within a week of my hiring him, and everything went exactly according to schedule. Dick was on-site the first and last day of the job, and his crew was pleasant and hard-working. Dick is a warm and responsive contractor with a heart of gold. The roof looks great. My only complaint was that I was not warned that the work would damage my garden. If I had been warned, I could have saved many beloved plants. However, everything else was 100% smooth.

Neil was the gentleman they sent out to do the work at my house and he was pleasant to work with, quickly diagnosed what the problem was with the water line, and fixed it properly. The ceiling repair, which involved the removal, replacing a section of plaster board, and repainting the area could not have been done better. I can't even tell where the patch is now. I highly recommend this competent handyman as professional and fairly priced.

I did not select this contractor. He requested one-third of the price as a deposit, when all other contractors submitting estimates required none or a nominal fee ($100). I asked for references and he said 'You have Angie's List'. I requested names or phone numbers and addresses for references, and was given cursory information from the top of his head - check out xxxx address, on the corner of x and x! I wanted more than that.
