Small jobs welcome

Hi, I’m Reed Pratt. I have been working in the home remodeling industry for 20+ years. I went out on my own in November of 2023 as a one man show. I take extreme pride in my work, with attention to detail, honest communication, and a commitment to customer satisfaction. Whether it’s a small repair, custom carpentry work or a renovation project, my goal is to deliver results that exceed expectations while keeping the process smooth and stress-free. I look forward to helping homeowners bring their ideas to life.

"Mr. Ferrell first connected his computer to my computer via internet and worked for quite a few hours trying to determine what exactly was wrong. The next day he continued working from his computer for several hours. He determined he would have to have my desktop tower to complete the repair. He and my son met in Huntsville to exchange the tower. He then cleaned up a lot of what was wrong and reloaded Windows 10. He deleted the D: drive which had way too much memory allotted to it. The tower was returned and I plugged it all back together and it is working better than it did when I first purchased it. I would use him again and I recommend him highly to anyone needing computer updating and/or repair. His work is warrantied and he is very personable, knowledgeable, and helpful."

"Sales process was good, courteous and helpful. Installation instructions were easy to follow. Did have a small issue with one sensor which was easily solved with a call. Control panel is easy to use and well constructed. Phone app is the best part. Not a big fan of a 2 year contract and the monthly rate feels a little high, but definitely a decent system. I had emailed them a question pertaining installing on double hung windows and never received a reply, but other than that their phone support prior to that was good."

"Great job on my windows. Many of my double-paned insulated windows have broken seals, which sometimes camouflages itself as a dirty window. But Jesse and Kevin tried over and over to make even those shine, before it was finally determined that they need to be replaced. They also did a great job of cleaning my screens and sills. Eric, the owner, was very professional, and the price would be hard to beat! Thank you, Window Genie!"

"The claim process was so smooth. We submitted the claim for each service online and we got response Email with the appointment time and mechanic detail. The technicians showed up within the appointment window and did a good job. We are overall happy with the Choice warranty for the price and value."

Windows questions, answered by experts

Casement window types differ from standard windows in that they have a hinge on the side or the top of the window so that it can open inwards or outwards. If your casement windows open upward, they usually have a crank to operate them. Casement windows with side hinges typically operate like a door, opening and closing without a crank.

The maximum protruding distance allowed for a bay window is determined by its flank angles. 30-degree flanks can extend about 13 to 14 inches. If the angle is 45 degrees or larger, then the bay window can stick out about 19 inches. If the window extends too far out, it would cause structural instability and safety concerns.

It is generally recommended to remove window screens for the winter, especially in climates with heavy snow, freezing rain, or frigid temperatures. Removing them helps prevent damage to the screen mesh and frames that can be caused by ice and moisture buildup between the screen and the window. Taking out the screens also allows more natural light and warmth into your home during shorter winter days and makes it easier to clean your windows thoroughly. In warmer climates where harsh weather is not a concern, the decision is more about personal preference; some homeowners prefer the clearer view, while others leave them in for convenience.

To keep cold out, look for treatments that sit close to the window frame and are made from thick, insulating materials. Thermal curtains, cellular shades, window quilts, and insulated shutters can all help retain heat. Layering window treatments, like pairing lined curtains with cellular shades, can provide even better insulation by further reducing drafts and heat transfer.

Bow windows need support because they are large and extend out from the exterior wall of the home. Bow windows may extend 1 foot to several feet from the outside of the home, so you’ll need to provide additional support to handle this weight. A window contractor will be able to provide the proper amount of support for your new bow window.
