He found our drain from the kitchen sink was running slightly uphill, which explained years of slow, but functioning drainage. He had to run new drain pipes for the undercounter sink anyway, so he got the drain lowered into the main stack by 10 inches!
Dropping the drain to the main stack took time, as we have an older home and he had to cut into a cast iron stack pipe and move the dishwasher to access the stack.
Now you can't stand too close to the kitchen sink when it drains as you'll may get sucked in! :)
The tankless hot water heater works great and under the sink looks very uncluttered and quot;pipe-wiseand quot;.
Bubba did a great job and I will hire him for any future plumbing jobs I can't handle. I tackled the kitchen first.
My budget was somewhat limited, so I went to Home Depot to pick out cabinets that would suit my tastes without breaking the bank. The selection of cabinet styles and finishes was diverse enough that I was able to find something that I liked within my budget, and the personnel present at the time were helpful. I had wanted to use corian for my new countertops, but Home Depot said that they had no one available to install corian. As an alternative, I selected Silestone. Home Depot had a limited number of colors available in Silestone - there are many more options available. I selected a fairly standard sink and a new stove since the existing oven in my home was undersized. The salesperson who was assisting me worked hard to find multiple sales and discount offers that could apply to my purchases.
The problems with using Home Depot became apparent during the tear out and installation process. The people that they contracted with to do the installation, though they were very courteous, did not work well with the personnel at Home Depot nor did the personnel at Home Depot work well with their contractors. I'm not sure where the lines of communication broke down. Either measurements were not made properly for the cabinets or spacer bars were not planned for correctly. Regardless, installation of cabinet units would be delayed for days because the installers would have to wait for additional matching spacers to be ordered. Spacers are not terribly expensive, should just be ordered in excess, and then the extras returned rather than having a kitchen in disorder for longer periods of time to save a few bucks.
Another example of poor communication between Home Depot and its contractors - the existing flooring in my kitchen is slate tile that had been put down after the old cabinets were built in place years and years ago, so it is about 2 inches higher than the original floor. It had been made clear that the floor under the new cabinets would need to be built up with a couple of layers of ply wood before cabinet installation. The contractors started to install the new cabinets without building up the floor first. I had to argue with them, get them to call Home Depot, and then pull out the new cabinets (only one unit fortunately), and do what they were supposed to do. Had things been communicated properly in the first place, I would not have had to argue with them.
They did build up the floor properly. They did set the cabinets properly. The pulls were all hung beautifully (I bought those on line). I had to make them come back to redo some of the toe kicks - they thought they were done, but in reality, the staple gun had run out part way through.
A little electrical work had to be done to make the outlets in the kitchen up to code and to add a little under-cabinet lighting. The electrician that was brought in ran the wiring well enough, but he managed to gouge a hole through my kitchen wall that went all the wall through into the other room. No, it did not get fixed. I have something hanging in a strategic place to hide the crudely patched hole in the other room.
One thing that many people do not anticipate is the long wait between the cabinets all being set in place and the countertop being installed. They have to do the final measurement for the countertop after the cabinets are finally in place. The people who installed the countertop for Home Depot operate out of Shreveport. They did a good job with the installation and told me what they were doing throughout the entire process.
The cabinets, in the end, were set in place properly, but Home Depot does not provide finish work. Any gaps left between your cabinets and ceiling or walls because the cabinets are of a slightly different size or configuration than your previous cabinets are left for you to deal with. They also do not have anyone come to your home to make sure that the work was done correctly.
Home Depot does not include the electrical work in the estimate that they provide. You pay extra for that. Even though your dishwasher is pulled out when the old cabinets are removed, you are held responsible for the cost of hooking it back up. And you also have to pay a plumber to install the sink and faucet fixtures. I also had to pay the plumber to hook up the gas line to the new gas stove. Home Depot is not very good at informing you of these additional expenses. I'm sure it is all somewhere in the fine print of the contract that you sign."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/la/monroe/home-depot-inc-reviews-5679711.htm"},"position":8},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"PARADISE ENTERPRISES INC","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"LA","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Anna H."},"reviewBody":"Demolition involved removal of two short walls and doorways, existing flooring, drywall and fixtures, and the existing ceiling which was very low. Paradise Enterprise has (had?) its own carpenters and electricians. The carpenters and electricians showed up as promised and their work seems to have been of very good quality.
The drywall/paint crew can do a good job when they choose to. Unfortunately, they frequently did not show up when promised, sometimes for days at a time, which delayed other work. And they seem to do the bare minimum in some cases but do very well in others. For example, the staining on the new French doors is beautiful, and though it was a mess to deal with repainting the master bedroom because of things that the previous owner had done, they did an exemplary job. However, in the new bathroom, someone assumed I wanted crown molding, so they were not careful when taping and mudding the joints between the wall and ceiling. They also mixed up the paint colors more than once even though they had a list of the correct paint colors.
The tile work was done by a crew from Bob Moss Carpet One working through Paradise Enterprises. Like the other people on the job, they were all very courteous. The people in the store were very helpful when I was picking out tiles and colors. The work was generally OK. However, they used a few defective tiles in highly visible spots rather than discarding those tiles and did not place tiles well in a couple of corners. I pointed out the problems, but I don't have time to keep riding them to correct something that should have never happened in the first place or to deal with the mess of having it all ripped out and put back in again.
The plumbing fixtures were provided by LCR/Plumbing Warehouse in West Monroe, as recommended by the contractor. Generally, the face-to-face customer service was good while I was in the store and they were very patient with helping me find what I wanted within my price range, but they dropped the ball on getting some of the fixtures to me on time. As a result of their failing to let us know there was a problem, the toilet I had planned on having access to after surgery didn't arrive and get installed. It would have been easy to order something else in its place had I known of the delay. They also failed to order a valve for the shower, and then the wrong one was ordered. In the end, that ended up working to my advantage - the incorrect one was the more expensive fixture, but they did not charge me the higher price.
Plumbing for the bathroom was done by Kelly Plumbing, again contracted by Paradise Enterprises. On the whole, they seem to have done a good job. They handled most of the problems with the plumbing hardware and fixture hiccups, and there was only one minor adjustment required to one of the drainpipes after the job was finished. However, I just recently, I replaced the Kohler toilet with a Toto toilet myself. The Toto works much better (more powerful flush, so no sewer back ups). During the replacement, I discovered that the toilet flange that Kelly Plumbing installed was not attached to the floor (my house is raised). I'm not sure how sound of a plumbing practice that is.
Some of the extra cost over and above the estimate is because I chose to install stained wood cabinets instead of painted cabinets. There were also some problems with getting the cabinets stained evenly. They had to redo it. I also had to get them to sand the cabinets before the second coat of polyurethane - the painters seemed to think it was not necessary despite the rough surface created by the first coat. I also had my kitchen, utility room, and a second bathroom painted while the work was going on. In all, the work took June through November, and I was a good $15,000 over budget. The delays that did occur were because of the drywall/paint crew and the plumbing supply house that failed to notify us of a problem with getting fixtures in.
Bud Crow, the contractor, will provide you with an itemized list of everything that is purchased for the work. You pay for that plus labor plus his 10% mark up. I really should have kept track of the hours of labor. I don't think I was intentionally overcharged for labor by Bud, but it's possible that some of his crew mistakenly reported that they were at work for me when they were working somewhere else instead. A couple of times, items in the list of purchased things were items that were not used on my job, and Bud readily removed them from the charges. It's easy to identify a color of paint or stain or that was not purchased for your remodel, but it can be difficult to know if mud, tape, or nails on an itemized list is for your job or for another person's job.
The one really strong positive about this contractor and his crew - I did not hesitate to leave them alone at my house all day. I had to go to work to make a living myself."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/la/monroe/paradise-enterprises-inc-reviews-5566295.htm"},"position":9},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"Merry Maids of Wenatchee","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"LA","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Charis S."},"reviewBody":"The initial estimate visit went very well and she was very professional. Said that 2 people could clean our 1,800 sq. ft. home in one hour which would be $75. That sounded affordable to us so we went ahead and hired them. Good. The first cleaning, I came home at 5 pm from work and they were still cleaning. No big deal, and they were cordial and finished quick. When they left, I went inside and got a nice nose-full of cigarette smoke. Not that they had actually smoked in the house, but must have been heavily on their clothes. The welcome packet of paper and such also smelled of cigarette smoke - not very welcoming. I brought this to the attention of the manager and she was very concerned and apologetic. Next cleaning she would make sure they were non-smokers. 2 weeks later, I left a note requesting that the wood blinds on the windows (not many, only 2 rooms) be dusted. Anticipating a nice clean home to come home to, we were dissappointed. The bathrooms looked great, but that was about it. They did not vacuum the living nor family room and did not touch the kitchen except for the floor. The kitchen floor was done poorly, with debris in the corners and uneven wiping streaks. The managers excuse was that they were soooo busy lately that they were rushed. How about the next time they get busy, will our service that we pay for be compromised again? Just not worth our hard-earned money. Even though we were offered a free cleaning next time that would be supervised, we declined and will move on to a hopefully trouble-free cleaning service."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/wa/wenatchee/merry-maids-of-wenatchee-reviews-2308783.htm"},"position":10}]}
