I was told that the job would take two days and I planned accordingly. The first day was to remove the old fence, set the posts and let the concrete set. I was told this would take 4-5 hours to complete. The second day they would put up the chain link and complete the job, and it would take approximately 3 hours. So I decided to take off from work on the second day, Wednesday, July 10th, to be here to supervise the work, assure that it was completed to my satisfaction, and to remit payment. I also figured that I could use any time that might be remaining to take care of a few other errands.
At a little after 11:00 AM, I was getting impatient that no one had arrived, so I called Scott Fence. I told them that I was expecting them today and was wondering what time they would be here to complete the job. After she checked, she told me that they were building my gates today and would be out tomorrow morning to complete the job. I explained to her that I was told repeatedly that this job would take two days, and that I had taken the day off from work to be here. She put me on hold and spoke with their owner, Charles Scott, about the situation. I was told that a crew would be rescheduled and be out this afternoon to complete the job.
Fast forward to 4:10 PM, and no crew from Scott Fence. Patience gone, I contacted them again and was told that if they hadn't made it out by this time, then it would be tomorrow, that something must have delayed them at another job. She also mentioned that Mr. Scott, who does their scheduling, was gone for the day. I was nearly speechless and told her that this was unsatisfactory, that I had taken time off from work to be here. She said she would leave a note for Mr. Scott and he would call first thing in the morning. Mr. Scott did not call me the following morning.
The thing that really upsets me is that Scott Fence seems to have no respect for their customers or their customer's time, and how their unprofessional conduct inconveniences their customers who are about to write them a substantial check. I ask for a day or two notice before they begin the work, and they call me the morning they are to begin. They tell me that the job will take two days, I plan accordingly, and they don't show up on day two, and didn't bother to call. I call them, was told that someone would be out that afternoon to complete the job, and when they cannot make it as promised, and again they don't bother to call. I can't believe they would treat their customers like this.
On 7/11/13, I went to work and during the day, Scott Fence completed the job. Initially, the job looked good, but with closer inspection, there was a number of problems. Those problems were: post caps not put on one corner post, and the outside posts of the gates, an entire section of fence in the back corner had but one single tie attaching to the top support, and several of the posts from the old fence that was removed in the back was not cut off at ground level, but appeared to have been torn off when it became loose, leaving a very sharp jagged metal protrusion of about 3 inches above ground. Additionally, the clean up of the work was abysmal. I found concrete and cut chain link debris throughout the yard and excess concrete was poured in the service way.
On Friday, 7/12, I contacted David Bueche via his cell phone and got his voicemail. I asked him to call me so we could arrange a time to meet so I could pay them, and also mentioned the problems list above and that I would like to get them corrected. I received no return call from Mr. Bueche on Friday.
When it became apparent that Scott Fence was going to likely blow off my concerns, I took the time this weekend to correct much of the issues myself with the exception of the post caps. On Monday morning, I again called David Bueche to meet so I could pay him and to see about the post caps. I did not reach him, but he did return my call late that afternoon and we discussed the issues and agreed to meet the next day.
Finally on July 16th, Mr. Bueche and I met at my home and I was able to show him the problems that existed and what I had corrected myself. He came with post caps and put them on. He also was kind enough to give me a small credit on my final bill for my trouble.
So if you are looking for a fence job, I cannot recommend Scott Fence USA, LLC. Please note that we have two Scott Fence companies here in Baton Rouge. Scott Fence USA LLC owned by Charles Scott, and the other is Forrest Scott Fence. I had estimates done by both as well as several other companies. I decided to go with Scott Fence USA for several reasons, and it was not just price. However, knowing what I know now, I should have went with another company. If you need any insight on the other companies, please let me know.
The guy that came out to give me an estimate was great.
