Via an email conversation I was told that an on-site scheduled appointment was needed but when I telephone to schedule the appointment I was told to drop my laptop off.  I became a little perturbed because of past experiences but dropped it off anyway.   The technician explained what he thought the problem was in a language that I understood and by the time I left I was comfortable that I would not be taken advantage of.  Chip repaired my computer in about 3 days (which surprised me) and even gave a discount that I didn't see on Angie's list.  
When I picked up my laptop, the new person was very cordial and friendly and apologized for being new and alone in the shop.  But that was ok because she did what was necessary to assist me and it went well.  I was unable to access the internet, even with my wireless connection but now so far it works great.  Yes, I would definitely recommend Chip to not only Angie clients but to all my relatives and friends as well.

Diagnosis took a couple of days and then they had to order the card which took another five days. However, the new card is faster and better than the old one. The staff is always helpful and professional. I will use them again as they did try to save me money with longer diagnosis. I am very pleased with the results.

Rob the technician, had it out and back together while I waited. It just
took me a minute, he said, "No Charge" . They have a minimum $50
diagnostic charge which he waived and I was on my way. When I need a
repair I will bring it to rent-a-n***. They have a customer friendly
attitude.

Very knowledgeable and easy to work with. They quickly diagnosed my problem, and their fees and turnaround times were reasonable. Even though fixing my initial problem caused a subsequent issue that had to be repaired, they were fair, professional and prompt in resolving our second repair. I would definitely recommend this company, and plan to use them in the future for any computer repair needs that might arise.

They have been out to the house before and always been professional. They are always prompt. If it’s something that they can’t repair at the home or help me with it at my home they give me recommendations as to what the next would be and it’s not necessary that they have to do this or it will cost me this much money but they will say that it is still under warranty and they would contact the manufacturer. They are very straight forward about where to go next and don’t always mean that I will have to give it to someone and would cost so much. They explain to me in such a level where I can understand it. They do the best what they can do for me and if they can’t fix it they spend time doing all the diagnostics.

Computer is still not working properly.  Very slow.  Also the day after I picked up the computer my credit card company called and someone had charged a $300 computer program to my credit card that I use exclusively online.  I am suspicious that someone at the computer repair place got my number off my computer but I can't prove that.

"I'm sorry that you're still having issues with your computer. We do our best to fully clean every machine, but with the significant number of new threats (>20000 every day), that is sometimes an impossible goal. We also strive for 100% customer satisfaction, and I would like to make an attempt to set things right by you, if you feel the service you received was unsatisfactory. I apologize now if I have the details of your repair mixed up. We do have a record of a virus cleanup and repair from your address, but it is under a different customer name (most likely someone else from your household), and was completed at the beginning of March instead of the beginning of April. If this was not when you had the system in the shop, please let us know so I can review our customer notes again, if necessary, and find the correct repair Your system had a significant virus infection when it was brought to us, and we made a best effort to clean the infection without resorting to drastic measures such as reinstalling your operating system. Usually, our cleanup procedure is effective, and testing at the shop showed acceptable performance given the hardware in your system; but apparently in your case, something was either overlooked or deeply hidden and programmed to return. In situations such as that, the only viable solution is to back up the user data and reinstall Windows completely. This guarantees that any viruses on the system are removed, but also necessitates that all third party software (printers, scanners, Quicken, Microsoft Office, etc.) be reinstalled. We generally reserve a fresh installation of Windows for systems with irreparable operating system corruption, or where the viruses keep reappearing after they seem to be gone. Though our standard warranty does not generally cover reinfection of viruses, in your case, we would be willing to extend a complimentary fresh installation of Windows. We will back up all of your data, reinstall Windows using the product key on your computer, install all the Windows and hardware updates for the machine, and then copy all of your data back on to the system. At that point, you would have to reinstall all of your programs, as if you had just purchased the machine. This is the only way to ensure that no viruses remain hidden on the system. Regarding the charge on your credit card, viruses and spyware, and a special subset of malware called keyloggers, are all designed to monitor your use of the computer and steal personal information. It is very likely that one of the viruses on your system is responsible for compromising your credit card number. Looking at or for customer data, except as required as part of a specific repair, is an offense that results in immediate termination at our company. If you truly believe one of our technicians stole your personal data, please call our shop and ask to speak with the manager, and provide us with both the technician who worked on your computer and the details of the incident so we can look into this matter more fully. Again, we're sorry you are still having problems with your system. If there is any other way we can help you, please call our shop and ask to speak with the manager."

I have used Rent-a-nerd before. This time a password stealing virus had infected the computer which is used for company bookkeeping and payroll. This virus got past all the antivirus software and then disabled the firewall. Pop-ups made it impossible to use the machine online and the accounting programs could not open because there was not enough free memory to run. I dropped the computer off in the morning and it was ready the next day.
