"The painting project went very well. Micheal came, did measurements, checked paint prices, and gave me a fair and reasonable estimate. We signed the contract on a Friday, and the next Monday morning, he and his partner showed up ready to work. Everything was power washed, and the next couple of days they did caulking and prep work, including covering all windows. Then on Friday they spray painted two coats on my house and garage. A beautiful job completed one week from signing the contract! I particularly appreciated that Micheal showed up when he said he would, he communicated with me about his plan, and patiently answered all my questions. Both of them were clearly competent and meticulous to details, exceeding my expectations. They were both polite and respectful to me, an elderly woman. An unexpected severe windstorm came up, and they quickly reattached my downspouts before having to leave. But Micheal returned another day to reattach some birdhouses and brackets to my garage. I am very pleased with their work, even my neighbors are impressed. I requested a business card to share with others."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Avoid using cleaning products that are abrasive or contain bleach or acidic components on composite decking to avoid discoloration. Early-generation Trex decking isn’t designed to handle pressure washer cleaning—and if you use them on second-generation boards, always use a low setting to avoid the risk of damage that can risk voiding your warranty.

Hiring a contractor or professional deck refinisher is the best way to ensure your deck is properly stained. They have the expertise, tools, and supplies to do the job quickly and efficiently. However, staining a deck is a manageable task for most homeowners, and doing the job yourself can save money. Just keep in mind that DIY staining is a long process requiring physical strain, so it may not be the best option for everyone.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

You don't need to seal your deck after painting it because most exterior paints are waterproof and weather-resistant. While stealing is not necessary, it can add an additional layer of protection.

The best temperature to paint a pool deck is between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, because many paints and sealers require temperatures warm enough for the chemical reaction to take place for proper curing. The paint should not be allowed to freeze, and temperatures above 90 degrees can cause the paint to dry too quickly, also preventing the chemical reaction from following through to completion.
