"I got this company's name thru Angie's list. Local Topeka businesses unfortunately did not respond to my calls. But I consider myself very fortunate, that Randy not only responded immediately, he was able to match the brick that had deteriorated on my porch, he was able to perform the work in outstanding and timely manner. I am more than happy with this company! Btw I still have not heard from the local businesses, their loss, my gain!"

Small jobs welcome

"I recently contracted with JB Concrete to tear out and replace my driveway. My contact, Miguel, was easy to work with through out the whole process from the bid proposal to the final day of pouring the driveway. At our first meeting he completely explained the process, the basic costs and a time line of activities. Of course, inclement weather required some modifications in the completion of the work and I was fully informed how the work would progress. The tear-out and removal of the old drive was done in half a day and the gravel base was also placed during this work. I requested a modification to the standard driveway by having an additional car size pad added to the drive. During the placement of the forms Miguel consulted with me that the placement and size of the addition was as I required. As the forms were placed, steel re-bar was also placed on the crushed stone bed on a 2 sqft pattern and holes were drilled into the adjoining sidewalk and floor of the garage and re-bar was inserted into the holes and connected with the re-bar in the driveway. His crew working to pour the concrete knew exactly what to do and the driveway was completed efficiently. An additional amount of concrete was added to the center of the driveway thus increasing the strength of the driveway bed. The final brushing of a broom surface with framing of the edges completed the process producing a pleasing and quality driveway appearance. The whole process from bid to completion was less than a month and would have been completed more quickly were it not for the weather. As an after thought, of the 5 contractors contacted for a bid, Miguel and one other contractor actually came to the sight, measured and explained what they would do and how much it would cost. The other three just gave an estimate over the phone and were quite a bit more expensive. If you want quality concrete work done timely and professionally, I would definitely recommend JB Concrete for quality work done at an affordable cost."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Chip seal layers gravel and a liquid bitumen one at a time on-site, while asphalt directly pours a pre-combined mixture. Asphalt must be sealed, but it will last up to four times as long as chip seal driveways. Aesthetically, chip seal has a natural, rustic look compared to the traditional asphalt slab.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

The driveway apron is a technical term referring to where a private driveway meets the public street. If there is a sidewalk in front of the house, the driveway apron is typically on the opposite side of the public sidewalk from the driveway itself.

The three most common types of asphalt are hot asphalt, MC cold mix, and UPM asphalt. Hot asphalt is used most often for paving and patching roadways while it’s hot and workable. MC cold mix asphalt cures more slowly than hot asphalt, but it can be used for temporary patches and repairs in low-traffic areas. UPM is also used cold, but it can be used as a longer-term fix, usable in almost any conditions at almost any temperature.

Regular sealing, crack filling, and professional inspections help extend pavement lifespan and prevent costly repairs.
