The challenge in all 3 areas was making the new fixtures fit and work in old spaces. Our electrician, Wes, did a terrific job in retrofitting the new fixtures into place and significantly, took the extra time to make them look good visually when the old holes and new trim didnt' fit quite right. We appreciate that extra attention to detail. And although the chandelier replacement involved slightly more labor than originally anticipated, they stuck to their original quote. Explanations, cleanup, protecting surrounding areas, and pride in work were all evident. We've used Ashpaugh a few times before over the last 5 years and have always been happy with their prices and service and continue to be pleased.
Description of Work: Replaced 2 bath/fan fixtures and removed an outdated ceiling fan and replaced with chandelier (in 20 ft ceiling). Although these jobs ideally would have been relatively straightforward, we live in a 30 year old house and were replacing original fixtures with new ones (that I pre-purchased myself at home improvement stores).

What a great experience! I had lost power in two rooms and had no clue as to what was going on ....as a DYI person, tried a few basic things, but gave up. I wanted someone local in Westfield and called Ashpaugh Electric, Inc. The receptionist was polite and schedule me an appointment in the same week! I was very excited as one of the rooms was the master bathroom. Then on 9/6/12, Shane arrived on time as schedule and I immediately hit him with a ton of questions (again the DYI came out in me). He was pleasant to converse with and answered all my questions. He then went through the testing to find the problem. He located the problem with a previous DYI light switch change....and within an 1 hour had the problem fixed! He also listened to me as I now have a company to do the larger electrical upgrades in my home! I look forward to the next project coming up for them to complete (installing canister lights in an office and hallway, separating an electric switch to separate the two areas as well as replacing vanity lights). This is one job that I no longer need to Do it myself. The prices are very reasonable and the folks at Ashpaugh are very easy to work with. Thanks so much for Shane for doing a great job!

The entire experience went very well. The technician, Shane, did an excellent job of explaining what he was doing and why certain items needed to be changed. The experience went so well that we are having them come back out next week to get our electrical system up to current code requirements.

It was a blessing. Brian Ashpaugh came out to our house, which was newly purchased and in need of some modifications that I wanted to install. He was consultative, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. We looked at a few other electricians and nobody came close in terms of the comprehensive value offering. Brian's guys were all great. I had them work on about 6 different projects over the course of 3 months and got to know them very well. They even helped with simple things like mounting plasma TVs on the wall. Brian's attention to detail was such that he caught some things that I didn't and corrected them without me even asking. I'm not kidding, these are guys you'd trust in your house when you're not even around. People comment on the quality of work when I tell them that much of it was added after the house was built. You can't even tell. And the natural gas generator is a home run. Brian and his company have been a pleasure to work with and we'll continue to use him for anything we need in the future.
Description of Work: I have had Ashpaugh Electric perform a number of services such as the installation of additional can lights throughout the house (our builder cut corners on a new house), basic rewiring and addition of dimmer switches, installation of flood lights on the exterior of the house, the addition of a dedicated 220 outlet for a hot tub, surge protection for the entire house, and a natural gas generator to serve us in the event of power outages. None of this was "basic electrical" and it was countless hours of very detailed work that they did an excellent job with.

During the evening of Thursday, July 19, lightening struck our dog's electric fence line in the yard, then traveled to the GFI outlet in the garage where the transmitter was plugged in. That whole outlet was blown out of the wall. The resulting power surge also "fried" our kitchen land line phone, a garage door opener, and a small TV. The next morning I called Ashpaugh, and they said someone could come out Monday at the soonest. This was a particularily violent electric storm, and they were very busy with calls. Since they had such a good reputation according to Angie's List, and there was no fire, we decided to wait. The electrician arrived promptly at 8:00 a.m. Monday morning. He replaced the GFI outlet and tested the others where electronics had been lost. He also answered questions about whole house surge protectors, which may be a future investment for us.
Description of Work: Replaced GFI outlet in garage that had been struck by lightening. Also checked outlets where small appliances were lost due to the power surge.

We had a bad circuit breaker over a weekend related to our air conditioning. It was exchanged with the circuit breaker for our dryer over the weekend so we could survive the heat, and I left a message for Ashpaugh over the weekend asking them to contact me first thing Monday so we could ensure that we replaced the bad breaker and inspected the circuit breaker we had placed in the A/C. They were extremely responsive and called us first thing on the Monday. They made us a priority and we were one of the first appointments. They were punctual and efficient. We would definitely use them again.

It is most regretful that Member's residence is outside of our standard travel area. With the extent of travel to her home from our business I could not give her the best value due to the length of travel. I have contacted my Angie's List representative as I was not aware that our travel radius identified Hancock county as our standard service area. I did apologize to Stephanie for our misunderstanding to her

Person answering phone was very pleasant and helpful. She was able to schedule service within 2 days which was perfect for me. Greg arrived on time within the 2 hour time frame given. He communicated well, understanding what I wanted as well as explaining what he was doing & what he found in the wiring. This is a project I had planned to do myself, but got into 1st outlet and couldn't find a ground wire, so thought it best left to professionals. Greg was actually able to find the ground wires & installed the receptacles I had purchased, saving me a lot of $$. After testing all the outlets to be certain they were working, he cleaned up his work site (a lot of dust in 50+ year old walls!). He was very professional & I'll request him if I need any future electrical work done.

We had the electric go out in our garage causing the freezer and electric fence to stop working. Shane came out and located a GFS outlet (that we were unaware of) and found it had been tripped. He reset it, outlets started working again. Came up with solutions for adding another non-GFS outlet for our freezer to be plugged into. Very punctual, polite, professional. Explained issues clearly, even with my incredible lack of electrical knowledge. Will definitely use again.

Electiricity to our sunroom (an addon) is out--the breaker keeps clicking off. Called Ashpaughs. They sent out someone who took some time to understand the problem. He seemed unable to come up with a solution so we made some suggestions. He concluded that possibly goes back to possible nick in wire during some underground excavating a few years ago. Came up--with our help--of running wiring from an outlet in an adjoining room putting a track on the floor to the wiring in the room which was presumed to be undamaged.Said he would go back to the office to get a bid on the work from his boss. Dave Ashpaugh would be in touch with us shortly. After a week we called Dave. He did return our call with an estimate. When i asked if we could have someone else come out to discuss other possible solutions that might be less intrusive in the room, he said he would get back to me. After not being able to reach him at that time--he was out of the office--we decided to call another electrician who came quickly, had proper equipment for testing and solved the problem by finding the damaged wire and repairing it.
Description of Work: Called Ashpaugh's to help solve problem with breaker for our sunroom clicking off repeatedly. Serviceman came, spent an hour looking around. With some guidance from us, he came up with a possible scenario for the problem. He then went back to his office to get a price from his boss. We did not hear from them for a week until I called their office.

We sincerely regret that the members were dissatisfied with our diagnosis and options given. It was our diagnosis that due to the age of the underground direct burial cable, and the fact that no digging in the vicinity of the cable routing had been done for a number of years, that repairing a single "nick" was not in the customer's best interest; as it has been in our 47 years of experience that there is, on most occasions, multiple faults in an underground cable that can cause repeat failures and extreme customer dissatisfaction. We are most regretful that we disappointed the members in our communication. We constantly strive to provide the utmost customer service and level of electrical expertise for our customers.

The guy who did the estimate listened well and really tried to understand what we were trying to do. estThe owner, Brian Ashpaugh took great care in pricing the work, organizing the sub contractor to bore or in this case to shoot the missile to route the new underground conduit. Mr Ashpaugh personally over saw the exploratory aspects of the work prior to the underground work. The subcontractor did an amazing job of creating an underground pathway for the new conduit run from house to the garage, under a driveway and under plantings. When done it was truly almost imperceptible that work had been done by them. The electrical inspection testing, installation, and extras were done in a very efficient time frame. Where inside work was done it was done neatly, quickly and professionally. Mr. Ashpaugh personally consulted with me on numerous occasions about what was planned, how we perceived the job going, etc and what punch list issues there were. All such minor issues were promptly handled. It is rare to find such a conscientious contractor.
Description of Work: A variety of work was needed and interrelated along with some minor "fix-it" items:1) New underground power source to a detached 80 y/o garage with minimal disturbance or landscaping or driveway2) New ground rod for main breaker panel3) New sub panel in garage4) Complete home electrical check to detect latent problems5) Install mid-floor flush mounted electric outlet in living room floor6) Rewire a heretofore none functional outdoor light circuit which now works7) Test and label all breakers to outlets in the house to update panel legends All work performed in 80+ year old home and area with mature landscaping and old wiring Provided direction NOT to use arc fault circuit interrupters in old residence due to chronic repeated nuisance breaker trips. This work could have been very expensive but severely problematic for me as the homeowner so dissuading me from doing this work was actually a blessing.

When I called to make an appointment, I was offered an appointment time within 1 week. Brad arrived as promised around 9 a.m. He replaced a ceiling light fixture and some damaged wiring that had caused outlets in adjoining room to stop working; replaced a ceiling fan and two exterior light fixtures. He also attempted to troubleshoot two interior spotlights over the fireplace and explained although he did not have time to replace them that day (we hadn't purchased the new fixtures anyway) which of the new styles of fixtures would work best with the ceiling configuration considering our old fixtures are no longer sold. We liked his professionalism and ability to answer our questons and how our 35+ year old home's electrical system and fixtures could be updated that we purchased an inspection plan that includes a service call. We will schedule our next appointment with them soon.
Description of Work: Install celing fan; 1 interior light fixture & 2 exterior security light fixtures. We provided the ceiling fan and 1 interior fixture and purchased the 2 exterior fixtures from Ashpaugh. I moved into my 1970's 1600 sq ft home in October 2011. There were basically no overhead lights or ceiling fans. This was a huge problem for me, so I called to setup an estimate with Ashbaugh, as they are so highly rated on Angieslist. I got and appointment for a few days later and Mr. Ashbaugh came out to see the work and complete an estimate. I never heard back from him after this. After about two weeks, I was desperate to get the lights and fans up, so I gave in and called Mr. Quik to come do the work (quickly). After Mr. Quik telling me how much it was gonna cost, but that they would do it all that day, I placed another call to Ashbaugh because I was concerned that Mr. Quik was going to charge me $500 per fixture. I received a call back and Mr. Ashbaugh apologized for not sending an estimate at all, and told me he would be much cheaper. He went back to look at his notes and got back to me with an estimate right as Mr. Quik was beginning the work. His prices were about $100/light and he promised to come get the work done quickly. I fired Mr. Quik and hired Ashbaugh. Wes, the master electrician is fabulous. He is a nice, hardworking guy that does a thorough job. The work was completed as promised and was satisfactory enough for me to hire them again. I was still fairly aggravated that Mr. Ashbaugh had just failed to call me back or supply the estimate, which I had taken time out to meet with him for, until I literally had the other electrician at my house with his tools. I also found it super-annoying to get a phone call from his assistant, Tara, at 7:30am each morning before the electrician was to arrive around 8:30am, to confirm the appointment. After being rudely awoken several times, I made sure to tell her I was pre-confirming and did NOT need a call at 7:30am. I re-hired Ashbaugh in the middle of some demolition work in which I was taking out walls in my kitchen and dining room. After going at it with my sawzall, I was concerned that the electrical wiring still in the walls was hazardous, and requested that they come take out all the wires ASAP. The same electrician, Wes, arrived the next day and looked at the work to be done. He called into the office and then told me that they would bill me labor + materials because that would be much cheaper than charging me for the work separately. Based on the fair price I was previously billed, I did not see a problem with this. Wes, and another electrician, removed the wiring, and came back for part of 2 more days to move around more wiring and outlets and install a light. At the end of 3 days, Ashbaugh billed me $2000 and stated it was only for the work up until that point and did not include finishing the work. I was shocked at the $2000 sticker price, but they said it was only high because I had needed expensive materials for the oven wiring, and I paid immediately. A week or so later, the other electrician returned for 3 hours to move/install some of the switches, as I had been left with a bunch of boxes with wiring, but hardly any functioning electrical. After this visit, I has billed an additional $400+. A flashing light started going off in my head that this was way too much for the work performed. My GC and another electrician confirmed this for me. I emailed Mr. Ashbaugh saying that I was concerned over being charged $2500 for work that had not even been finished. I asked for the cost breakdown of the work by job. He replied to me with a copy of the cost breakdown by hours + material. I had been billed hourly for each of the electricians (even though it was not really a 2-person job all of the time). I replied again saying that I felt I had been overcharged and asked for the cost breakdown if it had been charged by the job, as I had been informed by Wes it would be much less to charge by labor + materials. I also asked for them to complete the work before I paid the bill. Mr. Ashbaugh ignored this request again. I did not hear back from him, but I received another bill in the mail for the $400+ plus interest, although the bill was not even 30 days old! At this point I was very aggravated and upset by the situation, as Mr. Ashbaugh makes sure to include his stellar Angieslist rank on every email, yet certainly was not providing me with that level of service. After cooling off for a few days, all this time without working outlets, I informed Mr. Ashbaugh that I had hired another electrician for my additional electrical work for the remodel, and that I would have the other electrician complete Ashbaugh's unfinished work the upcoming weekend. As I would have to pay the new electrician for that work, I told Ashpaugh that I would not be paying the outstanding $400 bill if Ashbaugh did not come and complete the work at no additional cost prior to the weekend. I immediately had my phones and email blowing up from Mr. Ashbaugh wanting to talk to me on the phone about it and come to my house to talk about it. At this point, there was no way I wanted to have further discussions or meetings in my home, I just wanted the work finished and to be done with it. Being faced with my threat to not pay the outstanding invoice, Ashbaugh finally agreed and sent an electrician to come finish the work. It took a few hours. I was shocked that Mr. Ashbaugh would not have agreed to finish my work before being threatened with non-payment, as he knew that I was an Angieslist member, and I had been a good customer previously and had a valid complaint. He simply ignored my requests for the job-based cost breakdowns and to finish the work for what had already been billed. I am amazed that he would put his prized Angieslist rating at risk for a few hours of finishing work on a $2500 job. The electrician, whom I hired through my contractor after this, did a great job and had great prices. I fully expect a long-winded response from Mr. Ashbaugh to this complaint explaining why things got mixed up and how he fixed things and values all of his customers. Although the issue did eventually get resolved, it took a lot of time (as evidenced by the lengthy review) and added a lot of hassle into my life, which is precisely why I hire from Angieslist in the first place...to avoid any hassle!!! I don't know how Ashbaugh still maintains such a stellar rating from Angieslist when it is apparent from other reviews that Brian just never returning calls is a regular occurrence. That alone should not equal an A+ provider. I have spoken with some of my other Angieslist providers and they have told me that Ashbaugh used to be great, but that they also have stopped recommending him because of recent poor service and prices. Come on Angielist....this is what we join your list for....so we don't have shady providers doing the work in our home. Maybe Ashbaugh used to be great, but the service I received was nothing close to it and I am disappointed he is so highly recommended by Angielist. I feel bad leaving a negative review, but as I place so much trust in Angielist, I don't think it would be right to not share my experience with this "11 years in a row super service" provider.
Description of Work: My initial work included installing several overhead lights and ceiling fans as well as the new switches and adding 2 new outlets and moving 2 outlets. The most recent work included pulling the electrical wiring up out of the walls which were being removed in the kitchen & dining room, installing a track light, moving a bathroom outlet and then re-installing the kitchen & dining room outlets and switches (including a stove outlet) and installing one new exterior outlet and one new outlet in entryway.

I am most regretful for the perception of the entire service experience with myself and my company, Ashpaugh Electric, Inc. We did work very hard throughout the entire process of serving the member in attempting to provide her the utmost in service and quality of the items installed throughout her home on multiple service visits. I did provide, upon her request, a very detailed breakdown of materials utilized and labor hours per day required for the work that the member wanted performed in the most expedient fashion. It is most regretful when the member had a question; she refused to speak with me either at her home, or via telephone and only allowed text or email correspondence. At Ashpaugh Electric we are very customer focused on complete customer satisfaction with every customer, every time. I did attempt to resolve the issue when it became known to me via email. I am truly remorseful for disappointing our valued customer.
