"The Generator Authority did a timely and professional install of an 18k Generator at our home. He showed up at the scheduled time, did a great install and clean up, which I think shows he cares about the workmanship. Then did a instructional intro to our new generator. And I appreciated him so much that I had him do the 1 year check up and service. I highly recommend this business!"

"I am so happy to have found Hi-Tech. Jordan came out to do my annual maintenance on my generator. He was professional, honest and did execellent work. He found a small issue and gave me some suggestions for what to do, helped me understand wnat I needed to watch out for, and things to consider to help keep my generator running well over time. I was hestitant in changing service vendors - but am so glad I did. Hi-Tech has already proved to be more professional, experienced and customer focused. Thank you!"

"He arrived on time, even though it was pouring down rain. He got right to work installing the replacement remote control on the ceiling fan and showed us how the new controller worked. He tested the outdoor wall lights and determined that the motion sensor was not working on one of the lights. We decided to replace both lights, and he told us to give him a call when we buy the lights, and he would come and put them in for us."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

If you’re wondering if you can use your electric vehicle as a backup battery, it depends on whether your EV is compatible with bidirectional charging. This technology allows energy to flow both ways, enabling vehicle-to-home (V2H) backup power, vehicle-to-load (V2L) for appliances and camping, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) to support the power grid. Compatible EVs convert stored DC energy into usable AC power, helping reduce energy costs and enhance grid stability while providing emergency backup power.

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.

To reduce AC startup power for a whole-house generator, install a soft start kit or hard start capacitor, which lowers the initial surge by gradually ramping up the compressor. Using a smart load manager can also help by staggering startup loads, preventing a system overload and future costly repairs.
