"A section of our gutter was dislodged from our house and a squirrel made a hole in the fascia board to give her a place to have babbies. Prior to making the gutter and fascia repairs, my wife heard noises in our spare bedroom walls and we contacted Plunkett's Pest Control (AKA Varment Guard) who have been spraying our home for bugs annually. While the $400 estimate for placing traps sounded expensive since they wouldn't guarantee to remove the squirrels, we authorized the inspection and trapping. They set 2 live animal traps on our roof near the entrance hole and inspected it on a daily basis for nearly 2 weeks before they finally caught a squirrel. Dan Sylvester was the technician who performed the daily inspections. After catching the first squirrel, Dan advised that it was a mother squirrel and he anticipated that here babies would venture out within a few days. Sure enough, the 2 smaller squirrels were caught in the traps a few days later. While we thought that we heard additional activity in our walls a few days later, Dan stopped at our house and inspected our attic through a trap door in a closet to make sure that there weren't any more squirrels. Afterwards, we had the fascia board and gutter repaired. We're happy that Dan caught the squirrels and took them away from our home without hurting them. He seems like a very nice person who has concern for wildlife. We are extremely pleased with his professionalism, diligence, patience, and perseverance in moving the squirrel family to a better location in a nice wooded area far away from the walls of our home."

Earthquake Retrofitting questions, answered by experts

Many homeowners want to know whether earthquake retrofitting is tax deductible. Because it’s often considered a capital improvement, you usually can’t deduct it. In some cases and locations, you may qualify for tax incentives, but you’ll need to talk to a tax professional or the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) about your specific circumstances. You may also be able to find grant money for seismic upgrades, which can lower the cost of your insurance premiums and save money over time.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

An earthquake retrofit is essential for safety in an earthquake-prone area. Without proper retrofitting, your home is at risk of sliding off the foundation, shifting, or collapsing.

You may also require a retrofit if your home was built before 1980 when building codes began requiring reinforcing, bracing, and bolting for new construction. You may not be eligible for insurance to help pay for earthquake-related damages without a retrofit.

First, you can expect the project to be loud. If you have pets, you might want to take them to a friend's house during the day so they are not disturbed by any of the loud noises. In addition, you’ll need to provide the retrofit team access to areas of the house that will need to be worked on, meaning you’ll need to relocate personal items, clear clutter, and make pathways for the crew. Once the project is complete, a local building inspector will conduct a final inspection to ensure that the retrofitting is up to code.

A home with proper earthquake retrofitting can sustain minimal damage in earthquakes of up to 7.0 magnitude, although risks are higher based on how close and deep the earthquake is. A home closer to the earthquake epicenter will sustain greater damage, especially if the earthquake is closer to the surface of the Earth, but retrofitting can help minimize the risk of injuries.
