Small jobs welcome

"I had two drywall issues, one was with the living room ceiling caused by a roof leak, and the other with my garage ceiling caused by me stepping through it from the attic (doh!). I was contacted by Mark, the owner of M&K Homes, after going through Home Advisor. Mark's bid was not the cheapest of the contractors that contacted me, but he was the most personable and sold me on why paying a little more for his company would be worth it. This was a two day job. Day one was doing the repair and day two was texture and finishing. Both ceilings were originally finished with a "knock down" texture. Mark communicated with me every step of the way, so I knew what to expect and when to expect him. He showed up right on time both days. Mark was very careful to cover everything with drop cloths and plastic curtains to keep the dust off of my furniture. He was very professional right down to giving me a written estimate and how he handled himself throughout the process. The repair and texturing came out perfect! If you need work done and want it done right by a professional that does what he says he is going to do, then you need to call or hire M&K Homes!"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Tipping contractors, builders, or general contractors is not customary or expected. Unlike many service professions where tipping is built into the payment structure, construction professionals typically charge a full rate for their services. However, you may choose to tip a worker for exceptional service, such as if they go above and beyond, stay late to meet a deadline, or work on a holiday weekend. Before offering a tip, it's a good idea to ask about the company's policy, as some prohibit their employees from accepting gratuities. If you want to show your appreciation for a job well done without giving a cash tip, consider writing a positive online review or offering to serve as a reference for potential new customers.

It is common for a contractor to ask for a down payment before starting a project, especially for jobs that require purchasing materials and equipment or hiring a crew. The deposit amount can range from 10% to 50% of the total job cost. While a request for up to 50% is not unusual, a contractor should not ask for more than that, and you should never pay for a project in full before the work has begun. To protect yourself, always discuss payment terms before starting and have a written contract that outlines the project timeline and expectations. Additionally, be sure to hire reputable contractors and check their licensing and insurance before the project begins.

Joists and beams are both part of the flooring system above your basement, with the beams spanning the length of your home and getting support from vertical posts underneath, and joists usually spanning half the width of your home with no support posts underneath. The floor joists provide even support to the subflooring and flooring above, and they distribute that load to the beams. The beams then distribute that load down through the support posts to the foundation.

Carpentry is a skilled trade and requires many years of experience to acquire the skills necessary to do the job efficiently and correctly. Because every home requires a carpenter at some stage of the building process, carpenters are typically in high demand. The higher the skill level, the higher the hourly rate the carpenter can charge.

If you don’t have a power saw with a blade where you can adjust the angle, you could use a miter box and hand saw to make the cuts. The miter box contains wide slots to support the piece of baseboard and other narrow slots to accommodate the blade of the hand saw. However, it’s tough to make non-standard cuts beyond 30 or 45 degrees when using a miter box.
