"Ryan came and and made my driveway look like it was new again. He did such a good job I even had him come take a look at some food plots I’m looking to put in. Ryan was very easy to schedule with and was prompt and polite! I’ll see him again next year on my driveway for sure :-)"

"Alchemy did an excellent job cutting and grading a 30’x40’ site in my yard that will be where a new garage sits. Sam was able to get me on the schedule very quickly and completed the work in a day. He’s a nice guy and the price was extraordinarily reasonable. I’ve already recommended him a couple times and won’t hesitate to call him first next time I need any excavation/grading work done."

"Brandon came out to evaluate the project. I had 30 piles of asphalt millings that I wanted spread over my driveways. We agreed on a price and he was right on time for when he said he would be back to complete the project. He stayed in constant contact with me (even though I was at work the entire time he was at my home to work) and told me exactly what was going on. He didn’t get the job done in one day like he thought but he returned first thing this morning to finish up. Words can not express the outstanding job that was done. The driveways are as smooth as babies butts and if we needed something changed, he easily adapted to our needs. I highly recommend Mulryan Excavating to anyone needing large equipment work done. A young man but raised to be polite, courteous and above all respectful. If you skip this contractor, YOU are the one missing out. A in my book."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

A full backyard renovation can cost between $15,000 and $50,000, depending on the scope of the project. Excavation, materials, and labor costs all contribute to the final cost of updating your outdoor spaces, and expensive features like a pool, a fence, or hardscaping carry a high price tag.

The average cost for landscaping is around $3,500, but prices can range from as low as $200 for simple DIY projects to $14,000 or more for extensive work. Several factors influence the final price, including your geographic location, yard size, project scope, chosen materials, site preparation, and the type of landscaping involved. Professional landscaper labor costs typically range from $50 to $100 per hour.

For a smaller budget, you can focus on softscaping projects like adding mulch, flowers, and shrubs, which might only cost a few hundred dollars if you do the work yourself. A budget of around $5,000 could cover projects like a simple patio, new plants and tree trimming, or a water feature. More extensive hardscaping projects, such as pergolas, patios, and walkways, can push the budget to $14,000 or more. For example, a flower bed installation averages between $800 and $3,000, while landscape lighting installation can cost from $2,000 to $6,000.

Surface-level tree roots might only pose a small threat, such as being a tripping hazard or obstacle when you mow your lawn. But if mature tree roots start growing in the direction of your home’s foundation or plumbing system, it could be a real problem. Cutting small tree roots out before they grow too large can keep your home safe without removing the whole tree.

The best type of rock for landscaping depends on your specific project and needs, as different rocks are suited for different applications. For covering large areas or creating an affordable driveway, consider gravel, but note that it can wash away in flowing water. For water features, river rocks are a good option. Flagstone and cobblestone are ideal for aesthetically pleasing patios and walkways. If you are building a stone wall, fieldstone or small boulders are up to the task. Large boulders and landscape rocks work well as statement pieces, to fill empty space, or to indicate boundaries, but be mindful that they can overwhelm smaller gardens. The best approach is to first define your landscaping project and then select the rock type that best fits that purpose.

A half inch above ground level is ideal for metal edging. This provides enough depth for the edging to hold in place and enough height to keep in most landscaping materials (like mulch or gravel). If you install edging too high off the ground, it will stand out from your landscaping and pose a tripping risk. If you install it too low, your ground cover won’t stay in place.
