We are a small civil engineering firm located in Centralia, Illinois. Having started in 1981 with only one employee, Curl & Associates, Inc. has steadily grown and now has 5 employees. Because of our firm's size, we rely on the latest technological equipment to increase our production capability. We have been using CAD software for nearly 20 years. We have 2 separate surveying total stations and data collectors. This allows us to provide two independent survey crews, if necessary. All of our software is compatible with AutoCAD. Since the Illinois Department of Transportation is one of our clients, we also use Microstation Version 8, Version 8i, and Geopack software. We provide a variety of construction services which include construction staking and construction testing (i.e. concrete and compaction testing).

Land Surveying questions, answered by experts

A land survey provides precise property boundaries, reveals legal encroachments, and identifies rights-of-way, minimizing disputes. Understanding the exact dimensions and features of the property aids in informed decision-making and safeguards the buyer's investment.

With proper training and experience, reading blueprints is fairly straightforward and not very difficult. If you don’t have the necessary knowledge to interpret the symbols, abbreviations, and other notations used, blueprints may not make sense. Learning to read blueprints can help you understand the construction process and keep you more involved and informed when you’re building a house.

Costs vary, but you can expect to spend between $1,000 and $4,000 to prepare land for a mobile home or before you build a house. You’ll need to clear enough land for the foundation, which may require leveling or grading, as well as removing trees, stumps, and plants. Don’t forget to plan for permits and fees and the installation of a gas line, water line, and sewer main.

You will find a collection of licensed land surveyors in your area. Your real estate agent or construction manager may also be able to recommend a trusted professional. When speaking with prospective pros in your area, ask the land surveyor if they are licensed in the state, have liability insurance, and can quote you a fee before starting.

There are a couple of ways you can determine the depth of your well. One method is to use a device called a well sounder. This tool has a long measuring tape containing a sensor to alert you once the end reaches the water.

Or you can DIY it by using a long tape measure with a half-filled bottle of water attached to it. Lower the tape measure into your well. Once you feel tension on the tape, you’ll know the bottle has reached your static water level. This will give you an approximate idea of your well’s depth.
