"Very happy with the work that was done -- driveway, sidewalks, and new front stoop. They were very helpful and accommodating as we made adjustments to our original design. Most other companies were scheduling weeks or months out, but Apex got back to me right away and finished the job quickly and on time as promised. Concrete is expensive, so be prepared to pay a lot, but I would highly recommend them and would definitely hire them again."

"I met and dealt with Richard while I was having my bardominium built in 2023. The concrete he pored for the 64x40 was perfect. He helped me out in many other ways on his own time on the weekends. I am happy that he has acquired the honest family business his dad worked so hard to make successful, and that Richard has been a part of since a very young age."

"Nathan from The Gravel Doctor called me promptly within an hour of when I sent the inquiry through Homeadvisor. He asked me questions about the job to verify my request information and clarify what I needed done. He explained how he would prepare the site and complete the job. He provided an estimate, too. Nathan sourced the rock for the job and called me back promptly. He had also checked the weather to ensure time to complete the job. We agreed on Monday. He gave me a time he would be there, and he was there on the dot. He arrived on the dot. Nathan even removed two additional foundation chunks to improve the site before grading it and laying down the ground fabric. He filled, graded, and packed the new gravel parking area. The rock supplier had delivered extra rock. Nathan asked where I wanted the extra rock. He cut additional ground fabric and extended the parking area, blending in the extension seamlessly. He left the job site neat and clean. I am very happy with the new parking area. That area is now an asset instead of an eyesore. The gravel is tightly packed and shows no sign of tire tracks or indentations when we park or drive on the new gravel. I give my highest recommendation for The Gravel Doctor!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Three inches is a great thickness for a residential asphalt driveway that sees minimal to moderate traffic from cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, a thicker driveway can better withstand the weight of a heavier vehicle, such as a trailer or a recreational vehicle. If you drive a heavy vehicle on a thin driveway, you risk cracking and damaging it.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues.

The answer to whether or not you need to get a permit before you start your driveway can vary widely based on local ordinances and the scope of your driveway ideas. In most urban and suburban areas, a permit is needed before building a new driveway to ensure that a homeowner is using safe materials and proper drainage practices while designing and constructing a new driveway. In some rural areas, a homeowner may not be required to apply for a permit. When building a new driveway on your own, always check with your local building department to see if you need to request a permit. When hiring a driveway contractor, verify that the right permits are being used before driveway construction begins.

A driveway's lifespan varies by material. Asphalt driveways typically last 15 to 30 years, while concrete driveways last longer, between 20 and 50 years. The longevity of any driveway is affected by factors like extreme temperatures, heavy traffic, and the quality of maintenance. Regular upkeep, such as filling cracks, resealing the surface, and ensuring proper drainage, can help extend its life. For gravel driveways, regrading to fill in uneven areas every year or two is recommended.
