Rain gutters should be level from front to back to prevent spillage as water runs from one side to the other. Horizontally, rain gutters should not be level. A slope of at least a 1/4-inch per 10 feet is recommended from the high end of a gutter to the downspout.

Icicles can form if your gutters are clogged, but that’s not always the issue. You could also have an ice dam on your roof from poor insulation inside. In that case, the melting snow can refreeze in the gutter even if there isn’t a clog. Spring and fall tend to be the best times of the year to clean gutters. Fall is when all of the leaves drop into your gutters, so you'll want to clear that out to prevent clogs from becoming worse. Clean your gutters at least twice a year if you don't have any trees near your home. If you have many large trees or pine trees, then you'll want to clean your gutters every three to four months.

While you don't technically need different gutters for metal roofs than you do for other types of roofs, most metal roofs use a half-round or K-style gutter system. On top of that, your gutters will need more brackets than homes that have shingle roofs since the gutters won’t fit as flush against the fascia as they would against traditional roofing systems, where they’re installed to the roof deck.

On average, gutters last between 15 and 25 years. Certain materials (stainless and galvanized steel, copper, and cast iron) will have much longer lifespans, with much higher price tags. Vinyl typically lasts only 10 to 15 years, while the second most commonly used material, aluminum, lasts an average of 25 years. Only you as the homeowner will know if the additional cost of upgraded materials makes sense for your home.
