Chalk paint can be applied without sanding first. Keep in mind that while there are a lot of chalk paint color options available, there aren’t as many choices as latex or oil-based paint.

You can also learn how to paint furniture without sanding using a liquid deglosser, sometimes referred to as liquid sandpaper. This can remove any old paint, gloss, or varnish, without the need to manually sand. Apply the deglosser using a cloth, then wait for the chemical to penetrate through the surface. Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

In some cases, a simple clean, polish, and wax can make antique wood furniture look brand-new. However, always be sure to check the type and state of the current finish. Some furniture will require professional care, a new coat of finish, or even a new layer of stain to look like new.

Sometimes you will need a stronger cleaning solution to thoroughly clean furniture before painting. It’s best to start with a mild solution to avoid damaging the surface, especially if it is an antique piece. If you need to use a stronger mixture, try a commercial cleaner or mineral spirits. Before applying any solution, do a test patch on an inconspicuous area so you don’t risk damaging the finish.

It's perfectly fine to just refinish the top of your table instead of all of it. In fact, that's what most people do. After all, why finish the bottom of the table that nobody ever sees? Of course, depending on how exposed the legs of your table are, you might at least consider refinishing them.
