Generally speaking, the thicker the siding, the higher the quality. Thicker siding provides a stronger resistance against extreme weather conditions. Thicker siding also tends to fade more slowly under the sun. Hardie boards, a popular fiber cement siding option, is usually 5/16 inches thick. That said, homeowners should expect to get somewhere from 20 to 30 years out of their engineered wood siding, especially if they keep up with maintenance, including painting it every 10 years. Painting the exterior of a house costs an average of $3,150.

If you’re wondering how to make wood siding last longer, including Composite T1-11, inspect it annually or quarterly to spot and repair cracks, holes, or chipped areas. You’ll also want to re-stain the wood every 3 to 5  years or repaint every 7 to 10 years for protection (note that repainting requires stripping and sanding off old paint as well). Lastly, keep up with regular cleanings using a garden hose or low-pressure power washer to help prevent grime and discoloration.

Composite siding, with proper care, can last 30 years and sometimes more. Because its color has a tendency to fade, you might want to re-paint it every five years or so. Before purchasing composite siding, check the manufacturer’s warranty—you should have a long-term warranty to back up the quality of the product.

While homeowners' insurance can include coverage for siding, general wear and tear of siding is not covered. If your siding is rotting—especially because you haven’t kept up with proper siding maintenance—replacement siding will likely not be covered by your homeowners' insurance policy. Instead, insurance generally covers siding repair or replacement if your siding has been damaged by extreme weather, vandalism, fire, or some kind of collision, like by a vehicle.
