Unfortunately, concrete cracks happen, so there’s no surefire way to avoid them long-term. To slow down the cracking, apply a sealant every two to three years and use sand rather than salt to melt snow or ice. Using salt speeds up the freeze-thaw cycle, which may increase the likelihood of cracking. Additionally, keep vehicles and heavy machinery off of your concrete, as the weight can lead to more cracking.

You can put pavers over concrete following a similar procedure as above, but there are a few additional risks you need to be aware of—like stability, drainage, and the patio’s thickness. Once you lay a paver patio over concrete, it will be nearly impossible to treat any issues that your concrete may face, like cracks or water pooling. So while you may save some time and money on concrete removal and site prep, it may cost you more in the long run.

Skim coating is when you apply a thin layer of drywall compound to textured walls, creating a smooth surface. This can be done for relatively little money—skim coating costs an average of $600—and can be a simpler way to smooth a wall versus removing texture. Since you apply the skim coat directly on the texture, it is a faster process than removing the underlying texture altogether.  

Epoxy tends to be the most durable concrete finish, holding up on garage and shop floors for years. Epoxy seals the slab's surface, will run into any cracks and crevices, and can help to level the surface, so it tends to be a durable finish for most applications. The downside to epoxy is that it can be difficult to remove once applied.

Whether or not resurfacing concrete is worth it depends on the extent of the damage. If the damage below the top layer of concrete is too extreme, the concrete resurfacing cost may not be worth it, and it’s better to replace it. However, if your concrete has some standard wear and tear, resurfacing can extend its lifespan by adding a protective layer that shields it from future damage—without the cost of replacing the entire slab.
