"Don was extremely knowledgeable; we had several issues including a gap around our newly installed front door and the closure of multiple interior doors. Although we have had other people out to repair these issues, no one was able to really provide a solution until Don. We would highly recommend him for any of your home maintenence issues."

"The repair tech was excellent. He took the time to explain the problem and show us what needed to be done. The big thing, he could have easily racked up extra fees by replacing the back cover and pushing the dryer back in place but gave us the option to leave it out and sabe some labor fees. This is a big Electrolux dryer with LOTS of screws needed to replace the back and top cover. Would be a half hour just to do that, only to take it all a part again when he came back out to put the new part in. We would highly recommend Smock and they will be the very first ones we call if we need any other repairs."

"We were pleased with the work and Steve worked steadily while on the clock. We were surprised with the cost for labor to hire work locally, in comparison with where we moved from in NW Iowa, which was why we gave a 4.5 star on cost. We did feel that we received quality work which is the most important. We simply were not prepared for the hourly rate that handyman and contractors charge. He is certainly within the range of average for his fees. He seemed knowledgeable, fair, honest, and hard working. We will definitely keep him in mind for any future projects and would recommend his abilities to others."

Childproofing questions, answered by experts

The best time to hire a childproofing professional is at least three months before your due date. Although it might seem early, proper childproofing takes time, especially if you need extensive services like a pool fence. Getting your house ready now before your child is on the go only helps to protect them at all stages of life.

Many parents, especially first-time parents, agree that professional childproofing is worth it. These professional childproofing services are trained to recognize dangerous home situations that many people would overlook until it's too late. Furthermore, professional childproofing experts have access to top-of-the-line equipment you can't purchase at most stores, providing longevity and peace of mind.

Yes, tamper-resistant outlets are a safe and effective way to protect children from electrical hazards. They feature a spring-loaded shutter that blocks the outlet slots when not in use, preventing a child from inserting foreign objects. While they are the safest option available, it's important to note that few things can be considered truly 'childproof.' Children may still try to imitate adults by inserting a plug, so constant supervision around any electrical device is recommended. Tamper-resistant outlets are a much safer solution than childproofing covers, which can be removed by children and may pose a choking hazard.

In many cases, you can DIY home childproofing with success. You can purchase childproofing tools like cabinet locks, outlet covers, and table-edge guards and install them easily.

However, it's best to have a professional childproofing service work on larger projects like pool safety or furniture anchoring. These safety measures can take a lot of time and effort to DIY, plus, you want to ensure the tasks are done correctly to keep your child safe.

A professional childproofer will first survey your home to identify potentially dangerous locations, including stairs, cabinets, and pools. Once approved, your professional will order and install the safety equipment for you.

Some ways a childproofing professional will make your home safe include:

  • Anchoring large furniture

  • Installing safety gates

  • Installing safety latches on cabinets and drawers

  • Covering railings that could trap a child

  • Covering electrical outlets

  • Installing a swimming pool fence

  • Removing or covering electrical cords where possible
