If water beads on the surface, it needs additional time to dry—in fact, it can take weeks or even months to fully dry. A cedar fence will actually last quite a long time even if you don’t treat it with stain. In fact, you can expect to get between 15 and 30 years out of an untreated cedar fence. However, if you want to preserve its color and extend its life, treat it with a combination stain and sealer every three to five years.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

You should inspect the area regularly for rust, clean it with a wire brush, repaint it every few years, and apply a protective sealant to prevent corrosion.
