"I hired Rainy Day Landscaping (Jon-Paul Mangarin) to diagnose and repair my 12-valve irrigation system. After finding all but two valves (the previous owners of our property had hidden and buried them all) and verifying that they all worked, we decided to replace the old irrigation controller with a new one that could be controlled by a phone app. This is huge improvement! Jon-Paul also adjusted and replaced a bunch of old lawn sprinklers that were not functioning efficiently. Noticing the thickness of my Kikuyu lawn, Jon-Paul recommended aerating and de-thatching followed by a compost top-dressing. I also hired Jon-Paul to do tree trimming, edging shaping around all the beds and tree circles. This was followed by fertilizing and mulching all beds and tree circles. Everything looks great now! All the work was done to my satisfaction and I would recommend RainyDay Landscaping for all of the work I listed above."

Fountains questions, answered by experts

Yes, waterfall edges are still in style and even considered a kitchen classic. At one time, they were considered trendy, but now homeowners appreciate them for their timeless appeal, which adds value to your home.

DIY kits exist, but professional installation ensures proper filtration, landscaping, and leak-proof construction.

While they’re popular and have a lot of pros, the cons of river rocks include the following:

  • River rocks don’t break down or provide nutrients to plants.

  • These stones can get hot and scorch nearby plants.

  • River stones may heat the surrounding soil to inhospitable temperatures.

  • Rocks can block rainwater from seeping into the ground if installations are too thick or tightly packed.

Most downsides occur when using river rock as mulch in gardens and flower beds. However, you can still incorporate river rocks into your landscape as long as you use them in the correct ways.

If you’re drinking the water, you can store it indefinitely as long as you properly treat it and your container doesn’t break down. Without any treatment system, you should only leave rainwater in a rain barrel for up to four weeks. If you’re using the water on your garden or lawn, you can store your water until algae start to grow.

Yes, it is possible to make a fountain without a pump, though it may seem less intuitive and will require a bit more effort to use. In lieu of an electric pump, there are a few options including hand-cranked pumps or sprinkler systems that can work to provide water for a fountain.
