"We were initially happy with this company- they were efficient and priced on the low end, and very nice! The team came, mowed, and pulled away everything dead, so at first, things looked nice and clean. Then slowly over the months, our plants started dying, and then were ripped out once they were dead. So now, we have very few plants. It just seems like very little care or pride is put into the work; the time spent only 37 minutes (we timed it) last time on our large yard. If a potted plant is knocked over from the wind, they didn't even bother to put it upright. No watering, fertilizing, pesticides- just mowing and pulling away dead plant material."

Lawn Fertilization and Treatment questions, answered by experts

Carpetgrass is a low-maintenance grass requiring little fertilization that thrives in subprime growing conditions. However, regular mowing is necessary to avoid the growth of unsightly seed stalks, and you may have to water it frequently to prevent drying out the soil. That includes watering the grass over dry winters to help keep it healthy, and it may start dying out in particularly cold climates where it grows poorly. Carpetgrass can also be vulnerable to some types of turf fungus, so it’s important not to overthatch.

Your lawn will have visible signs if it needs fertilizing. If your grass looks discolored, is slow growing, looks thin, or your yard has bare spots, then it probably needs to be fertilized to give it the nutrients it's lacking. You should also keep an eye out for weeds and pests because they can also be signs of a struggling lawn.

First, you should figure out whether you have dormant or dead grass. Dead grass won’t come back, so you’ll have to reseed if you’re hoping for a lush lawn. However, grass can go dormant if it hasn’t received enough water or if temperatures are too cold. If it’s still decently warm outside, you can revive dormant grass by watering it. But if it’s mid-January in New England, for example, you’ll need to wait until the weather warms up again. If you want to keep grass green in winter, consider a grass like Kentucky bluegrass, which maintains its color year-round.

Yes, grass will regrow after forestry mulching, but the timeline depends on soil conditions, mulch thickness, and existing seed banks. The nutrient-rich mulch left behind helps retain moisture and improve soil health, encouraging regrowth. However, if the mulch layer is too thick, it may block sunlight and slow grass germination. For faster results, you can rake excess mulch, aerate the soil, and plant the new grass seeds.

In the fall, you should aerate the soil, overseed the bare spots, kill weeds, mow the lawn low, and rake your leaves. By boosting your lawn’s health in the fall, your grass will be stronger throughout the winter and come back healthier in the spring. You should also trim your perennials so that they withstand the winter and are ready for new growth in the spring.
