"Gary and his team demonstrated exceptional professionalism and efficiency throughout the project. By thoughtfully repurposing the existing wood planks, Gary not only delivered a strong and visually appealing fence but also helped us save on material costs. We are thoroughly impressed with the quality of work and grateful for the care and craftsmanship they brought to the job. "Steve arrived on time, was professional and courteous.  He performed work both at our home and at our vacation rental.  At our house, he replaced our screen and the latch to screen door as freebie.  The latch was a great bonus as I didn't even think to ask for this repair of our broken lock, but it is a huge help as we have pets that like to let themselves out the door occasionally and we were using a propped up stick to keep closed.  Steve also was a great help at our vacation rental in Kaanapali.  He did some paint touchups, reinstalled a cabinet and safe, as well as do a check of the drains to the sink and adjust our cabinet doors.  As I have found in the past that finding good help on Maui is not always easy, working with Steve was easy and his price was reasonable (also something hard to find).  I am happy to say I now have a handyman on Maui that I can rely on and have Steve scheduled to come back to the house in the next week for other repairs.

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

You should refinish your deck to maintain its appearance, durability, and longevity. Refinishing your deck protects the wood from foot traffic and the elements. It also helps extend its life span by keeping rot, mildew, and termites at bay. By maintaining your deck, you can avoid the cost of replacing your deck sooner. A refinished deck also looks great and restores some of its original beauty.

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.

Although composite decking is extremely durable, it’s also susceptible to extreme heat. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading, warping, and cracking. Composite also retains heat more than wood, which makes it dangerous to walk on in the summer. You can help prevent heat damage by only building with composite in shaded areas or using rugs to cover the hottest spots.

Yes, deck pier blocks can be used as an alternative to traditional deck footings, especially for smaller or low-to-the-ground decks. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks do not require digging or pouring. However, their use is dependent on local building codes. Some areas, particularly those prone to high winds, earthquakes, or hurricanes, may not permit the use of deck pier blocks. It is essential to consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck project.

A wood deck requires annual cleaning and regular inspections for loose or broken boards, nails, and screws. It should be refinished by applying a stain or sealer every two to three years to protect the wood from water damage, rot, mildew, and sun fading. The exact frequency can depend on the climate and the deck's exposure to sun and moisture. If your deck is painted, it will need repainting approximately every 10 years. Signs that your deck needs refinishing include faded, splintering, or warping boards.
