It was difficult to manage the job remotely, but the simple elements of attention todetail were missing.
I was given a time that the work would start, and it kept changing., and a time that the work would be completed which was not kept to.
The core work of replacing the walls, tile etc was done to a good standard, it was the additional elements that were paid for that caused the trouble. Removal of a shower screen in the second bathroom left sealant all arount, holes in the wall unfilled, and the shower curtain pole not fitted. I had to call again to get the work finished, taking extra time.
It was an unusual job that I was managing remotely, and the co
mpany handled that well - but overall the attention to detail was just missing for me, so I would not hire them again.
"Thank you so much for your review. We appreciate the open attitude and hope that we can serve you in the future somehow."
Throughout the process they took special care to protect floors and carpet outside the work area. The entire job was completed in one week.
However, from the beginning there were communication problems with regard to the specifics of the Ange's list offer from this company. For example, it was not clear from the advertisement that $800 for tiling really meant that 50-60% of this was for labor and that 40-50% was the real allowance for purchase of tiles. This could have been more explicit in the advertisement.
It should have been made clear that certain tiles, such as Travertine, would require additional payment for labor. This was also true for the installation of one row of accent tiles, which were part ceramic, part Travertine.
I assumed that remodeling a 5 ft x 7 ft bathroom also included painting the areas that were not retiled. This was not the case and there was further discussion on this matter. I eventually asked other contractors to complete the painting of the bathroom and requested that Tile Creations Inc pay 50% of this cost.
These communication issues detracted considerably from my experience with this company.
"We were really pleased to work with this homeowner; she and her husband were very pleasant. It appears that, perhaps, the homeowner did not fully read/understand the advertised deal and the ensuing conversations that explained it. There were actually very clear parameters stated in the deal; adding tile that required different materials would be more expensive both in the tile itself and setting material, as well as the labor to install. We were supposed to paint, and had agreed to do so, but the homeowner's effort to coordinate with another construction job ran far beyond time we could allot, so we refunded some of her payment so that the other company might coordinate. This was a difficult choice on our part; we simply were running too thin with the huge response to the deal. We hired extra crews to handle the excessive demand but it was rather unfortunate that the tight scheduling kept us from being able to return in a prudent time. Thus, the decision to refund some of her money seemed the only fair thing to do. In hindsight, we would probably hire even more people, or limit the number of deals available. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope that our customers will consider using us again."
"Respectfully, we would like to make it clear that the repaired area was pulled out (by us) as soon as we saw the non-level area. Once the homeowner saw the repair and was satisfied, we felt that the situation was resolved, so we are slightly confused as to the criticism in the review. Likewise, the homeowner was informed of the electrical issue of moving the light fixture, and was advised to employ a licensed electrician to move the electrical components so that this was done to code. The original deal stated that the company would install new lighting; however, the deal did not state that fixtures were moveable. Moving a fixture up requires additional wiring and electrical components that are beyond the scope of the deal. Tile Creations installed the fixture in the same place to which the original light was affixed. We make every effort to accommodate aberrations from our advertised deals; we did explain that we were able to mount a new fixture, but were not licensed to move wiring. Therefore, it is unfortunate that we were unable to satisfy our customer in this fashion. The difference in the tile height was a result of moving from a thinner ceramic tile to a thicker porcelain tile. We would have gladly shaved the doors if the homeowner had made any issue of it known to us. When we left the premises, the homeowner gave us a verbal thumbs up, and we left on what we considered to be good terms."
NOTE: This review has been edited. Our original review for Tile Creations Big Deal bathroom renovation stated that I was satisfied with their work and that they did a good job. Our original complaint focused on difficulties in communication, and Tile Creations' refusal to honor the second of two Big Deals that we had purchased.
A professional who came to give an estimate on that second Big Deal project pointed out some major workmanship issues that that we had not originally identified. We have sent photographs and descriptions of the problems found to Tile Creations and we have changed our review to reflect these problems.
The major problems identified include:
Floor tile was installed directly onto the uneven, cracked concrete base that remained after the old tile was removed. Concrete backer board was not installed as promised in the Big Deal and the statement of work provided by Tile Creations prior to beginning work. The resulting tiles are unevenly spaced, not flush with each other, and not level.
Two different colors of grout were used in the tub surround. Most of the grout was a light gray color; the grout along the tub was a darker reddish color. The darker color draws attention to the uneven grout lines where some new tiles had to be replaced in the course of installation.
The grout used in the project was very crumbly and rough, and is flaking off in some places. It was not smoothed, cleaned, or sealed as specified in the Big Deal.
The baseboards and shoe molding still show some raw wood where they were not completely painted. There are noticeable gaps between the wood and the floor. The finish work is sloppy.
Although we specified oil rubbed bronze for the plumbing fixtures and accessories, the tub drain plug and overflow cover are shiny chrome.
As our desired resolution, we are asking that the work be completed as described in the Big Deal that we purchased and in the written statement of work from Tile Creations.
Tiles should be evenly spaced, flush with each other, and level.
Grout should be all the same color, smoothed, cleaned, and sealed.
Baseboards and shoe molding should be neatly finished and completely painted.
Fixtures should all be the specified color - oil rubbed bronze.
If they will not complete the job as spelled out in the Big Deal and their statement of work, we'd like a refund so we can get someone else to fix these problems.
"TO any future customers reading this review. we did a great job for the Member. In which they have said them selves. The problem was we were treated very poorly by the customers. without going into detail and trying to stay professional I'll leave that out. They wanted us to do the other bathroom very badley.and i flat out refused to do the job. I preferred to give them a refund. As a small business owner and every penny counts. So please understand it had to be a very bad situation were i was willing to return $6,000 back to them.and I lost another $1000 of material that was pre-order for that bathroom.Bottom line treat people like people.I've been in this business for 20 years and never been subjected to anything like this before."
My husband and I shopped around for contractors at the big home improvement stores and also independent bath remodeling companies. Any estimate for just one bath was well over what two baths cost us. We took advantage of the special Tile Creations was running on Angie's List. Because of the special we were able to do two complete bath rooms.I called Tile Creations on August 16th, My phone call was returned August 17th, Andre Pascall and a staff member come to our home August 18th. Looked at the baths we wanted remodeled. We had the complete estimate 3 hours later ( by email) we agreed and arrangement were made to start the remodel 8/23/2012.This is a top notch company, all the fellows were so pleasant , courteous, and totally professional. Any questions or concerns I might have had were answered and attended to, or assured that it would be taken care of, and yes they always were. I asked for a few upgrades one of which was a larger cabinet 38" in the hall bath. I allow Andre to pick it out and he did a wonderful job. I am completely happy with his selection. In this day and age we can all be skeptical when dealing with the unknown. Please let me assure you that this business is reliable, honest, dedicated and completely deserving of your trust. They are excellent.I plan to have them back soon to redo my fireplace in the living with ceramic tile, I've hated the stone on it for 20 years. I'm looking forward to the return of this crew.I love my two baths, every penny was well spent, it was a pleasure to have had Tile Creations in my home and we recommend them whole heartily with absolutely no hesitation. - Julie and Bill Miller
The next week they came and completely tore out everything in my hall bath. Everybody who works for Andre is really punctual and polite, and very professional. Once again, they cleaned everything up every day--we could hardly tell they were doing work in the house, except for the carpet protectors that they put down to keep the stairs from getting messed up. They were super-careful not to let the cat out, either, even though they had to go outside a lot to cut the tile. Even my garage got left nice and clean. They took out my nasty old tub and put in a new porcelain one, and surrounded it beautifully with a really nice ceramic tile. I had vinyl on the floor so they took that out and put in new durock (is that right?) on the floor, then put the tile on. It looks so great. They painted the bathroom, put in a new vanity with a granite top, and even hung my mirror and towel bars. Both bathrooms looked amazing.
So I wasn't done...I was so happy with what I'd seen that I contracted them again to come and renovate my kitchen. They put in the most gorgeous travertine and then set me up with a tumbled stone backsplash that looked outstanding with my granite countertops. I started looking around at all the other vinyl in my house and got Andre to agree to stay a little bit longer and rip out the old laundry room floor and replace it with some porcelain tile, and then jump on my basement bathroom, so now I don't have any vinyl in my house. It just seemed like a no-brainer when I started talking to Andre about my fireplace...he suggested replacing the cheesy tile that had surrounded the opening with some marble. He showed me samples and I picked out what I wanted, and he came with the nicest gray marble and put it in for me. Looks like a whole new house.
I've been so pleased with what Tile Creations did in my house. I love the new look and I really appreciate how exacting Andre is in getting the tile just right and making sure that everything they set their hands on is done with expertise and care. I didn't have much knowledge about various types of tile, and would have just put something like ceramic everywhere, but Andre met me at the tile store and walked me through what would look best in each area of my house, and why I might want certain types in certain places. He never pressured me or made me feel like I needed to do more. But every time he got finished with a job, I was ready to start the next thing. He was very patient with me as I figured out what I wanted.
i was really happy with the work Tile Creations did on my house and I hope to hire them again when it is time to replace my hardwoods. I really like their work and recommend them highly.
