I took this old motor to him for a check up since it hadn't ran for 3 years. When i put it up it ran great but i was worried that something might have gotten into the motor, like mouse or bugs. He got the motor in the month of June and told me it would take about 2 weeks before he would be done. He called after 2 weeks and told me that the motor was ready. Said all it needed was a new water pump. The following week my family had rented a cabin on a lake for 1 week for a fishing vacation. We took the boat with the motor with us. The boat launch was across the bay from our cabin so it only ran about 3 minutes getting from the launch to the dock. The next morning my wife and i got up early and went fishing. Motor started easy and we headed out. After several minutes the motor overheated and seized up. Needless to say the vacation for us was ruined. I took the motor back to Gary and told him what happened. After 2 months he called and told me that he found the key was not engaging the water pump so it wouldnt turn causing the motor to overheat but that it was working now and started and ran great. By then it was late September and we had no desire to fish. At the beginning of this season i tried to start the motor. After close to 100 pulls on the rope and 5 different spots worn raw on my fingers i took the motor to a different mechanic for inspection. He stated that the motor had gotten so hot that the paint had burned off the motor heads and block. The bottom cylinder had 1/2 the compression it should and the top cylinder was down approx 25%. The only way to get this motor to run would be a complete rebuild. NOt very cost effective on an older motor.
I have had this motor for 22 years and never had any issues with it. When we moved to the Carrollton, GA area i was told by a marina to take this motor to Garys Backyard Boats since he was the only one who worked on older motors around here. This is the worst experience i have ever had with a mechanic.
