basement remodeling
 + -1 moreStarted fine with framing, very little insulation was installed, the project delayed by months. Even with full payment Michael Thomas, owner failed to pay the subcontractors and 2 of them put mechanics liens on my home. He still has not paid the liens, as of this writing 1/2/2012.
Description of Work: Built in basement for mother in law suite with a full kitchen.

 + 7 moreThe project started 1 week early with great results and that is where it stopped. A diagram of the room layout was provided to BBI, but was not forwarded to subcontractors causing build-out issues. Found Michael to be a money handler versus a project manager; all project activities were subcontracted. The project slowed to a crawl. I compared my stories with a fellow neighbor using BBI and found similar results. When the quality of work deteriorated I hired other subcontractors to install the carpet, tile, acid stain floor, etc., and inspect the work performed by BBI. When project issues occurred, BBI ignored them until a draw was due. Issues within the project include: Plumbing issues and water damage, doors installed improperly, subcontractors not showing for work and mechanics lien on house due to subcontractors not being paid by BBI, BBI not having a business license during project, non-responsiveness, and being 2 months behind schedule. BBI was released in late September.
Description of Work: Michael Thomas/BBI was hired to project manage and finish 1100 sq. ft. of my basement. Provided impression that the quality of work would be similar to the work completed for 2 of my neighbors that spoke highly of him. The activities were started 1 week ahead of schedule and in unison with another basement BBI started down the street. BBI s quotation was one of 4 project estimates received and was selected due to references from fellow neighbors. The project work included building out a game room, a media room, a wet bar, a full bathroom, and an exercise room (moving walls, drywall, carpet, plumbing, electrical, tile, etc.). I was given a heads-up that BBI's employees may be slow, but manageable if I stayed involved with the project. The contract was signed in late May with a written completion date of early August. I should have taken more of an interest in BBI work ethic when the contract was between BBI and Mr. Thomas, not me and BBI; it was corrected prior to obtaining signatures.

 + -1 moreIssue: Michael Thomas, the owner of bargain basements inc.(BBI), did not finish my basement. The first 5 weeks went well and I paid the first 3 draws (approximately 67% of the contract) . Once i got ahead of him on payments the work slowed to a crawl. On the completion date of June 22, 2007 he was approximately 40% complete. After consulting an attorney, I negotiated a contract extension with Michael to get the basement completed by August 24. Michael agreed he could do it and he signed the contract extension on July 30. On August 24 he was approximately 60% complete so I fired him. I've had several of his sub-contractors complain directly to me about either not being paid and/or slow payment. Now I m asking for lien waivers for all work that his sub-contractors performed on my basement and for him to return approximately $10,115.48 which is estimated to be necessary to finish my basement per the original contract specifications. My emails and calls have not been returned.
Description of Work: Background: My wife and I were pregnant with our 2nd child due March 1st and we were looking for a bigger house. We bought this house on 10/27/06 and decided to get the basement done as soon as possible. Preparation: We looked at several contractors and received 3 bids. We were planning on going with BBI because we had looked at a neighbor s basement he had done and it looked good. Neighbor stated that he used good subs. The only negative was that you had to stay on him to keep the project moving but we had heard the same complaint of other, more expensive contractors. Additionally we were told this was a side job for BBI s owner, he actually worked for another construction company full time. Finally, BBI came back with a 5% discount if we could start on March 19th, he stated a contract had fallen through and a slot had opened up. We signed a contract on March 10th with a substantial completion date of June 22nd.
