All contractors, of course, juggle more than one job, and there were times we felt the progress drug on and on. But generally all went very well, and Bill Schwed's(owner) ways to tie in the old and new structures were detailed and exacting and went very well. Our house is a much better house than when we began, mostly because he was willing to help us correct some flaws our house had. Bill is also committed to the job looking good,(as well as being a solid structure), and pays attention to details to accomplish that.
One thing everyone should consider when chosing a contractor is the quality of his subs, critical to the success of the job. Bill's subs were truly talented, dedicated to doing outstanding work. Also, consider details because they really matter: will retouch of paint happen? will trash be removed? will all the trim be level? will drainage issues be solved? will the entire team respect your property? Sheffield scored high in all the details. (If, however, you need an architect for your design, you would need to look elsewhere for that aspect of the job, I think. )
Another consideration: unexpected discoveries arise in any renovation (I have renovated several buildings), and it is important to have an experienced crew that can problem-solve, then fix things at a fair price, not taking advantage of you. Sheffield Construction won our respect in this area especially.
When we changed our minds on some design things we wanted, we had to go back to the drawing board with Bill Schwed and he worked with us. The ability to make changes was very, very important to our final happiness with the completed project. Changes are never convenient and slow a job down and increase costs, but it is important that a contractor be willing to change direction when you have made a and quot;mistakeand quot;/misjudged what you thought you wanted. The Sheffield Construction crew accomodated our changes very successfully. In general, I would highly recommend this company.
Thanks Sheffield Construction!!!!
I had noticed some cracks in our front basement foundation wall. I called Sheffield Construction Co to check it out. Bill came back with a method of marking the cracks so we could see if there was pressure coming from the outside of the wall. He also checked the foundation drain to make sure it was clear. Since the cracks were rather high on the wall he asked about outside events. We did have a rather large tree cut down in the front yard and when some of the chunks hit the ground the whole house shook. From that he surmised that the hits to the ground may have cracked the foundation. His team cut some holes in the foundation wall, forced re-bar in and filled with cement. They painted over the wall and it looks as good as new.
We would definitely recommend Billy's work.
Our only real frustration with Billy is his, at times, unrealistic timeline for when he'll be on site for work. It's not unusual for him to say he'll be able to come on a particular day to start/do a job and end up coming one or more days later. However, he is good to call us a bit ahead before he is actually coming and, thus, we can go about our day until he gives us the and quot;30 minute calland quot; that he is on his way.
With ongoing rains in September and a frigid winter the foundation repairs were completed by mid-November.
The interior re-build/repairs and additions were completed by April 2010. The siding on the back of the house was so twisted it also had to be replaced.
Exterior painting was completed by another company.
The re-built foundation wall was reinforced with cement and re-bar. This is the smoothest straightest and most uniform cement block wall i have ever seen. Bill also did the tile work in our renovated master bath and it is absolutely fabulous.
As with any project I would get a written work plan and have regular progress reviews.
