"Sam did an awesome job rebuilding our deck. He removed old and rotten deck boards and replaced with new ones. He helped remove everything from the deck and helped put everything back when the job was finished. He was always on time and was very detail oriented. We were very pleased with the finished product. We have ask him to comeback and stain the deck. Excellent workmanship!"

"His work in impeccable, He found leaks I was not aware of (showed me videos) and was able to fix them. He can do most anything. My kitchen floor was falling through due to water leakage from 15 years ago. I was only without a floor for 1 evening. He had to replace joists and beams. He cleaned up after his work EVERY day. He hung dust shields. He also laid the LVP in one day!!!!!! I will hire him for every job in my home!!!!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The best material for your deck depends on several factors, including your budget, location, aesthetic preferences, and the level of maintenance you’re willing to do. Wood decking, like redwood, ipe, cedar, and pine, lasts the longest, but it’s more expensive and requires more upkeep than composite and synthetic decking.

The cost to build a second-story deck averages $4,800, though the actual price could range as low as $420 to upwards of $16,000. While labor costs range between 35% and 50% of the total project cost, the materials and complexity of design will ultimately lead you to save or spend more money on this home addition.

It depends on the type of wood. The average cost to build a deck out of pressure-treated lumber is $15 to $25 per square foot, but more affordable varieties such as bamboo and cedar cost less at around $3 to $10 per square foot. However, when comparing the cost of vinyl decking versus wood decking, it’s important to also consider ongoing maintenance costs. For example, most woods require regular sealing to keep them protected against weather and rot.

Homeowners should build their floating decks at least 18 inches off the ground. Having it at this height will allow for better airflow underneath and help prevent moisture-related problems like warping or rot. That being said, local guidelines for deck heights may vary depending on where you live.

Before installing any materials under the deck for removing moisture, you should perform some prep work on the ground. Work the dirt under the deck to create a grade away from the home. A grade of at least six inches for every 10 feet works well. Do not leave a gap between the dirt and the home’s foundation where water could pool. Once you or a contractor regrades the dirt under the deck, you then can add materials over the top.
