"I want to apologize for the experience you had with Romanoff and we understand your frustration. We try to maintain the highest standards of service, but it's clear we fell short in your case. Please send me a PM if there is anything I can do to help."
Romanoff checked on everything throughout the process.
The initial work mostly involved demo. It went fine. But as the demo ended and finish work started, the level of quality of workmanship and materials used was very poor in many cases. The supervisor was rarely on site - I think I saw him three times over the whole 7 1/2 week process. And I do not work and am usually at home so I feel confident in saying that he wasn't there much more than that.
I'd like to give some specific examples of the unaceptable quality of workmanship/materials for my fellow Angie's Listers. There are too many to list here but I'll mention a few just from the bathroom this company remodeled. First, I noticed that several of the newly installed shelves in the bathroom were visibly crooked. I took a level to them and found several "on the line" and one totally outside of the "bubble." I mentioned it to the worker and he explained that his helper had measured up from the floor which was not level, so the shelves weren't. If he knew that already, shouldn't he have fixed the shelves so that they were level? The next problem I noticed was that I could stick my entire finger between the back of my vanity top and the wall. I figured out on my own that the worker had installed baseboard trim against the wall and then installed the vanity against that. So everything was sticking out 1/2". Again I pointed it out to the worker, (since if I had to mention every problem to the supervisor, I would be calling him multiple times a day) and the worker said oh we can caulk that. Not acceptable! Next I noticed that the bathroom vanity light was visibly off center to the vanity. I measured it and it was about 1 1/2" to the right of center. I asked the worker to correct the problem and center the light and he told me that I would have to be charged for it. I was shocked so I did call the supervisor. He actually argued with me for ten minutes straight that there was no error made and that if I wanted the light centered I should have had that stated in my contract. I was furious! This was a bathroom that was gutted to the studs (no light or box in place over the vanity area) and the workers installed the drywall, the light and the vanity, and I am being told that I shouldn't have the expectation that the light should be centered? The supervisor finally agreed to "eat the cost" (in his words) of moving the light but never admitted any error. After he so viamently argued his case with me (and he was clearly in the wrong), it was obvious to me that my customer satisfaction was not of any importance to him or his company.
I fear I am getting too wordy but I have so many more examples to share. Switching to the topic of reliability, I'd like to share that the worker assigned to our job started out working every day and by the third or fourth week (and by the way, I asked several times and was NEVER given a projected end date for the project and I have no idea why it took 7 1/2 weeks) he was only showing up sporadically, and would tell us about his other job, his trailer he had to pick up at the lake, and a number of other reasons that he was late or couldn't come at all that day. He took the cake when he showed up at 5PM for work one day, grouted the kitchen tile backsplash, and around 7:30 or 8PM explained to me that the grout would need to dry to a haze and then be cleaned off, and if he stayed to do it, it did it would be 10PM so I would need to wipe the haze off the tiles myself in about an hour. And I did it! Shame on me!!! I was in the kitchen till 9:30 PM removing grout haze from the tile backsplash that I paid Affordable Contracting to install!!!!
The last item I will mention is a douzy. The bamboo floor that this company installed as part of my job is creaking and bouncing and completely unsatisfactory. We've had a flooring expert and concrete expert out. They said that the subfloor was not properly leveled by this company and the leveler is not bonded and will crack and crumble with use. We actually just had to remove (and destroy) the floor Affordable Contracting installed due to the improper floor leveling job done by their employee. I would have thought that they would have assigned professional installers from Romanoff Flooring - their own company- to my job, but they did not and the floor was not properly leveled and now I am out thousands!!!! Like the $3,000+ I paid to have the floor leveled and installed, let alone the material cost of the flooring. Also, the supervisor nor any other representative of the company walked the completed job, so they really have no understanding of the final job and (lack of) quality and customer satisfaction.
Several friends have told me that I should request a refund of the company for the floor leveling and installation over an unlevel floor, and theflooring product that should have never been installed by them, but I cringe at the thought of dealing with them again. After the ten minute interrogation over $50, I can't imagine ever dealing with that supervisor again and I believe he would never accept blame for the clearly inferior floor leveling job done by his NON- professional flooring installer. If Affordable Contracting means what they say, and they really do care about customer satisfaction, they will contact me regarding a partial refund. But I will not deal with their supervisor who was unwielding and unreasonable in multiple instances. I am needless to say, extremely dissatisfied with this company!
UPDATE: This is a response to the response from Home Depot Services dated Aug 6, 2013:
The information in your response is simply inaccurate, as follows:
1. The fact that management did not know of my dissatisfaction only shows that they were not in appropriate communication with me. I did tell the Project Mgr of my dissatisfaction about: being charged $450 to move a pipe in the wall one inch, $50 to correct the off center light, his refusal to install the custom door casing I had ordered, that the job was taking too long, and being left with no power in my kitchen for over a week during the backsplash install. I asked him to please leave the worker assigned to me on the job until he was finished and stop pulling him off the job. This did not happen.
2. Site visits and correspondence were definitely not frequent. I know of appr. three visits which lasted about 15 minutes each over a period of 7 1/2 weeks. I was at home every day. The project manager was rarely in communication with me during the duration of the project and was argumentative during the conversations I do remember having.
3. If the subfloor whi
"[removed member name], We are upset to hear that your experience during this remodeling project was dissatisfactory. We were a bit surprised to learn of this, as our impression of your level of satisfaction throughout the job was very favorable. Was there a time where you expressed dissatisfaction to your project manager or to any member of the project management team? Your project manager provided several pages of notes for all site visits and correspondence, which appeared to be frequent. The project manager’s notes also contained a long list of various “extras” performed for you throughout construction, that were not part of the original scope of work, but were done for you free of charge simply because we wanted to make sure you were happy with the end result of your projects. We are a little unclear as to how this communication breakdown about your dissatisfaction occurred, and welcome your feedback. Your project manager provided several pages of notes on the issues you referenced. These included notation of where he warned you about the condition of the subfloor on which you had your flooring installed, which was in poor condition from a previous contractor’s work. We are sorry to hear that you ended up having to remove the floors; we did our best to advise you that the results may not be optimal. Ultimately, we will always do what our customers want, even if we don’t agree with the decision, which was the case here. Regarding the haze on the tiles, we checked with the installer and he said that he wiped the haze three times and was preparing to wipe it a fourth time, when he was asked by you to shown what needed to be done so that he could go home. He confirmed that it was 9pm when this occurred. We certainly understand that you were ready for work to conclude for the evening, but we want to clarify that the installer did not ask you to perform this work for him. We would never condone such a request of our customers. For the vanity, since this was a material provided by you and not ordered by us as part of your project, there was not a way for us to have anticipated where to place the light, which is why it appeared off once the vanity was installed. Likewise, we did not have a say in the cut of the vanity top, which caused the gap. For the shelving, this is the first time we are hearing of this issue. We would be happy to send a member of our team back to your home and make any necessary adjustments. [removed member name], we always strive to satisfy our customers. However, we cannot control quality of work performed on top of inadequate construction done by previous contractors or that of installation of materials we did not order. We are certainly willing to do what we can to fix any work where we fell short on craftsmanship now that we are aware of these issues. Our General Manager will be in touch this week to discuss this with you."
After picking out the carpet I wanted, I purchased it through the Home Depot. I received several emails detailing the installation process and notifying me that Romanoff would be performing the installation, and providing an online scheduling capability.
I scheduled the installation and received another email, confirming the date.
The week of my installation, I received another email with tips on how to make the installation proceed smoothly, and a call directly from Romanoff confirming my installation time window. The representative was very polite and courteous.
On the day of the installation, about 30 minutes before the beginning of the arrival window, I received a call from a Romanoff rep apologizing profusely and informing me that the individual scheduled to lead the install had called out sick, and that they had another team lined up to come and perform the installation (another Romanoff employee), but was currently on another project and would come straight to my place after.
All in all, my install window was bumped from the 9-11 window to the 1-3 window, which is fine. The company were prompt in letting me know about the problem, and did not try to reschedule me to another day.
The install that arrived was Jose T. and his assistant. They were both very polite and worked very hard. They called me from the road about 40 minutes prior to 1pm to let me know that they were on the way. They got right to work as they arrived and didn't stop until the job was done, about 2.5h later.
They then walked me through a thorough inspection of the job, pointing out to me where the seams were (I couldn't see them, even knowing where they were). I was given the option to keep the remaining (scrap) carpet, which I accepted.
tl;dr: The job was beautifully and professionally executed, despite the scheduling hiccup (which I felt was also well-handled).
"Mr. [member name removed], we are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with your experience with our company. As you are aware, as your job neared completion, one of the final nails for the window caused the glass to crack. Reordering the window caused some delay, which we understand was frustrating. However, upon completion of this work, we got the impression that you were very happy with the installation and there was no mention of a leak in the roof. As soon as the leak was brought to our attention, we offered to correct the issue, which was declined, so we immediately provided a complete refund for that portion of the work, as discussed in our face-to-face meeting about what had transpired with the project. We recognize that this project had its bumps, and wish such had not been the case, but we did stand by our work and addressed both issues immediately."
"Thank you so much for your kind words. We pride ourselves in a job well done and are always happy to see a satisfied customer. We also really appreciate you taking the extra time and effort to post this review. Knowing that Angie's List members will read about your experience with our company on this site will only strengthen our presence in this industry. Thank you again, and please feel free to call us for any future projects."
