The House Doctor

The House Doctor has been my go to for the last 6 years. Owning a historic home has required constant attention and projects to keep the house updated, there is always something that needs attention. Charlie has a vast knowledge and appreciation for historic homes. He always answers my calls or returns them in a timely manner and will come at a moments notice. If he can not do it, he knows someone in the business that can. I highly recommend the House Doctor.

Excellent in all respects

It went very well.  I've used him multiple times. I use him for every little thing around my house.

First, this guy is unpleasant and the last time I spoke to him on the phone he actually yelled at me because apparently giving a check for the service directly to the contractor who did my electrical work really made him angry. The electric worked for two days to upgrade and rewire my panel.  They broke the plaster around the new panel, but the work was done well otherwise. When I asked Charlie about the broken plaster he gave me a half-answer and didn't discuss it with me. The work for under the house was done in a slipshod manner, with the drainage systems causing terrible puddling. When I called him about it I got a similar run around. They fixed a wooden joint on my carport but the wood they left in the joint is splintered.
The work was mediocre and the attitude was downright frightening. I will never use this guy and warn anyone about dealing with him. He needs to learn a lesson or two about customer service.

I had intended to replace my back windows.  When I spoke to Charlie he suggested that he could repair the existing windows and that my front and side windows needed work. His guys brought a ladder and inspected the back windows, but he only looked at the other second floor windows from the ground.  I accepted his offer primarily because of the relative cost. 
After the majority of the work was done and paid for, he told me that he was loosing money on the job because the windows were worse that he expected.  He wanted me to do what was "right and fair".  His tone and demeanor became somewhat aggressive,  and he continued with remarks like " I take clients who take care of me."  When he realized that I was not going to pay him more than his estimate and our contract, he drove away in his pick up shouting across the street that he hoped I could sleep nights because I didn't take care of him. 
 He did complete the parts of the contract he started and except for some hurried work at the end the work was good.  
The rest of the story is worse, but this should suffice.  

They were terrible. I had to redo the porch within two years. They did not really replace the wood. They just kind of patched it. What they should have done was to remove the beams and put new beams in which they did not do, and they were very slow. It took them four months to do it.

I call him to get recommendations for other people if I do not have him do the work himself. I have used him on and off for about 20 years doing painting, ceiling work, re-conditioned floors and other stuff. He is like a contractor and has a lot of people working through him. He did a very good job and cleaned up after himself. I also had him do back door steps for me in the past. He was recommended to me; I have an old house and so does he so he can relate to some of my issues. He may be a little pricey but the people he uses are all bonded and he comes several times during each job and checks it himself. He is hard to schedule because he is very busy with lots of jobs. He is very honest and upfront about it and will tell you when he can get to your project.
