Mr. Jamison sanded the wood and returned it to us. He did an average job of sanding old paint from the wood. Additional work was needed to prepare it for varnishing. Because Mr. Jamison was not entirely clear on the instructions he gave me for the involved varnishing process needed for boats, we had to resort to calling the manufacturer's technical assistance line and get advice from the local marine supply store. It became clear that Mr. Jamison was not the PROFESSIONAL that he repeatedly claimed to be. After 10 days Mr. Jamison called and said that the work on the boat was complete and that he expected payment. I informed him that the work was not complete (he had not reinstalled any of the steering components, hardware, lights, seats, etc) as we had discussed and agreed and that I could give him $500 of the balance and the remaining $500 upon completion of the project. He had a fit! He was not PROFESSIONAL at all. He delivered the boat to our house that evening. We were not at home and we said we would call him the next day after inspecting his work. Upon inspecting the boat, we found that he had not sanded all surfaces properly in some areas. The transom and front hatch were still cracked and showed peeling paint. There were paint drips all over the interior and exterior. The line between the bottom paint and the paint on the boat gunnels was extremely messy and certainly not what we expected from such a PROFESSIONAL. When we brought this to his attention, he just argued with us and said that no one would notice the sloppy paint job once the boat was in the water. He also admitted that he coud have sanded the front hatch some more. He made no offers whatsoever to correct the job and complete it to our satisfaction. He was very argumentative. We took picture of the work and showed it to personnel in the paint department of a well respected marine supply store. Not only did they laugh out loud at the quality of the work, they said that the paint would probably flake and peel in a short time. Mr. Jamison was very unpleasant to deal with and it was clear that he would do no further work. We decided that the best thing to do would be to get our material from the boat back, have it installed by someone else, and pay him to get out of our lives. We made arrangements to meet so that he could return our hardware, steering mechanism, etc and get his check. We pointed out the areas that we were unhappy with and still he argued and made no offers to make the job right. Finally, when we asked if he had a business license (something we should have asked in the beginning) he refused to answer, demanded his check and left. On his websites, Mr. Jamison boasts pet sitting, home repair and boat services. We would not trust him to empty the litter box.
Description of Work: Mr. Jamison was hired to restore a 13 foot Boston Whaler that was in admittedly poor shape. He told us that he was a PROFESSIONAL and that he would use the best techniques and use the best materials possible. He was to sand and remove flaking paint and repaint/restore the interior and exterior of the boat in the original Boston Whaler colors. In order to do this it was necessary that he remove the gear box steering wheel hardware and other interior components. The wooden bench seats and console were to be removed and sanded for the us to restore ourselves. We paid him an initial deposit $1,000.
