When asphalt cures, it typically changes from a very dark black hue to a lighter, more matte gray color. Cured asphalt also won’t be tacky or sticky to the touch or emit any odors from the asphalt mix. Additionally, the surface of fully cured asphalt won’t deform under any pressure.

It depends on the type of sealer. Some sealers can dry in as little as 4 hours, but many can take up to 48 hours to fully cure. To play it safe, don’t drive on your driveway for two days after sealing.

Sealcoating asphalt costs $0.14 to $0.25 per square foot. Doing so prevents erosion in harsh weather and keeps your asphalt from cracking or getting potholes. It’s a good idea to hire a professional sealcoating company with positive reviews to do this work rather than do it yourself.

Ideally, you should seal your driveway when there won’t be rain for several days, but at a minimum, there can’t be rain for at least 24 hours. If it rains shortly after you seal your driveway, the water can wash away the sealer and render your work useless. You’ll have to wait for your driveway to dry out and try applying again. Yes, you can seal asphalt before it’s fully cured but you should wait to do so until at least three months after installing it. But if you wait at least three months, applying a seal coat can extend its life by protecting it from water, UV rays, and other damaging elements.
