+ -1 moreMY 80 YEAR OLD FATHER IS A RETIRED INDUSTRIAL ARTS TEACHER AND A CARPENTER. MY FATHER IS VERY PARTICULAR ABOUT HIS WORK AND HIGHLY ETHICAL. AFTER MANY EXPERIENCES WITH LOUSY CONTRACTORS, I NEVER THOUGHT I'D MEET SOMEONE WITH THE SAME WORK ETHIC, LET ALONE QUALITY. BUT I HAVE. THESE GUY'S WORKED DILIGENTLY AND ALWAYS CALLED ME TO GIVE ME A DAILY UPDATE. IF THEY HAD TO DEVIATE FROM A PLANNED IMPROVEMENT, THEY ALWAYS CALLED FIRST AND DISCUSSED IT TO MAKE SURE I UNDERSTOOD AND WAS OK WITH THE PROPOSED CHANGES. IF THEY COULDN'T COME AND WORK THEY CALLED ME THE DAY BEFORE. AND THEY SHOWED A LOT OF ATTENTION TO DETAIL I WASN'T EXPECTING BUT WAS DELIGHTED WITH - THEY WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MATCH THE ORIGINAL WOODWORK, GOING AS FAR AS CUSTOMIZING IT FOR ME. WHEN THEY ENCOUNTERED PROBLEMS THAT REQUIRED MORE WORK, THEY TYPICALLY ONLY CHARGED FOR MATERIALS, SELDOM FOR THE EXTRA TIME. I WAS ASTOUNDED AND DELIGHTED.
Description of Work: CONTRACTOR WAS TO DO THE FOLLOWING: ADD INTERIOR STAIRCASE (I ONLY HAD ACCESS TO THE BASEMENT THROUGH A WALK OUT BASEMENT DOOR). A FORMER OWNER HAD REMOVED THE INTERIOR STAIRS AND EXPANDED A POWDER ROOM TO A FULL BATHROOM. OF COURSE, IN A 100 YEAR OLD HOUSE THAT HASN'T BEEN UPDATED IN 50 YEARS, NOTHING IS EASY. THIS REQUIRED CONTRACTOR TO DO DEMOLITION, REMOVE A TUB, REMOVE AND REPLACE TILE, MOVE ELECTRICAL, UPDATE PLUMBING LINES IN BASEMENT, INSTALL NEW HOT WATER HEATER, REPLACE TOILET, RECONFIGURE DOORWAYS, ADD A CLOSET, REMORTISE DOORS, DRYWALL, AND PAINT. THEY ALSO HAD TO RE-INSTALL BASEMENT SUPPORTS THAT WERE REMOVED IN 1950 AND JACK UP THE FLOOR. THEY WERE CAREFUL TO SAVE THE VINTAGE MATERIALS I WANTED TO SAVE AND REUSE.
