Charlie was quick to give a quote and collect money, but completely failed to deliver any work. When I say no work - I literally mean no work over the course of several months. The project is designed by a professional architect and Charlie was unable to work through the design or find a responsible engineer or subs. Several times his subs returned quotes wildly out of line with his estimate, and he was quick to blame the architect - basically anyone but himself. Charlie did refund some of the money paid, so that’s positive. Since cancelling the engagement, have established relationship with another GC and the project is proceeding nicely without all the drama.
Response from Tilse Construction
"Mr. [Member Name Removed] notified Tilse Construction that he no longer wanted to proceed with the project due to the pandemic & increasing cost of materials. At no time did Mr. [Member Name Removed] indicate dissatisfaction with the timeline of starting the project as there was always open communication w/Mr. [Member Name Removed], the architect, & the engineer. Any contractor cannot control the cost increase from various vendors & sub-contractors used. There are many moving parts to getting a job started for any customer. This job changed several times as the engineer reviewed the plans. The engineer stated that the materials needed changing due to a lack of lateral support. Initially, Tilse Construction quoted Mr. Smiths' estimate for wood, but the engineer said the project needed metal for the lateral support. Hence, part of the increase. The job went from wood to metal & then back to wood again. The decking system went from cedar to trek transcends that the architect mislabeled wrong on the plans. We established upfront during the discussions on bidding; Tilse Construction couldn't start until 1/2021 due to its current projects at the final stages. This timeline was acceptable to Mr. [Member Name Removed]. Mr. [Member Name Removed] is quick to forget what Tilse Construction did to purchase his home he is presently living in & where this project is taking place as he bought the house from Tilse Construction a few years ago. At the time of purchase, Tilse Construction agreed to hold a second mortgage for Mr. [Member Name Removed] for 12 months due to Mr. [Member Name Removed] settling personal matters while moving to Georgia. There has always been good communication & friendly relationship between Tilse Construction & Mr. [Member Name Removed]. We are shocked & saddened to see this review as we left this relationship on good terms with Mr. [Member Name Removed]. He indicated that he wanted to move forward at another date after the pandemic with Tilse Construction. We wish nothing but the best for Mr. [Member Name Removed] in the future."

Charlie has extremely high quality standards. All work was exceptionally well done. He also brings creative design ideas to the table to see that the average homeowner gets the most out of their purchase.
