I am uncertain as to whether I will use this piano serviceman in the future because he charged me a $100 service fee to come out to my home to provide me with a quote for piano repairs, and he did not inform me in advance that he would charge a $100 service fee for the quote. I spoke with him twice on the phone prior to having him come out for the quote. He did not mention the fee in either of those conversations. I cannot help but feel a little duped at being charged a $100 fee. Mr. Newsong tried to justify the fee to me, but to be quite honest, I do not think that any undisclosed fee is justifiable. Consequently, I do not know whether I can trust this company to do my piano repairs without "unforeseen" costs finding their way on to my bill. If I do decide to have this company do repair work for me, I will likely ask them for customer referrals first.
"I don't remember every conversation, especially multiple conversations of which you said we talked twice. For all I knew, when we talked the second time to make the appointment,we had discussed the fee the first time you called. I remember you had a large grand piano that I couldn't even raise the lid to examine the inside because the hinge pins were missing. I provided pins so that I (and now you) can raise the lid. I also remember that the key cover wouldn't raise and I had to remove obstructions so that I (and now you) can raise it to even play the piano. I also remember replacing a missing screw (large) so the pedal lyre could be attached to the piano. You drive from Marietta to Duluth to estimate a job that now has become a service call. At any rate, if you decide to have the work done, I will gladly take the estimate fee/service call fee off the total bill, thereby making it a free estimate. If this is not satisfactory I will refund your money. Let me know. Greg Lawrence"
We checked around and his price was nearly $100 below some others. During the move, they were very competent and careful, and they made no mistakes that I could tell.
Some minor negatives:
I asked if his truck would trench my lawn, and he said no, but it did make depressions of perhaps a half inch. We had already postponed one appointment because it had been only 3 days since a rain. On the other hand, I am not sure how it could have been done differently except to wait for the end of the rainy season, which we were not willing to do.
We had trouble reaching him in the beginning because his phone was out of order, and then at the end we couldn't use a credit card because his "swiper" was out of order.
These issues are not significant to me, and I would use him again in a heartbeat.
