We also wanted our carpet cleaned after my mother-in-law used the bonus room as a bedroom while recovering from a broken ankle. Her wheelchair left black marks on the carpet and the area around the bed was grey with dust and spotted small food and beverage stains.
Larry came out to sell me his carpet cleaning services. He told me they might not be able to get out the wheelchair marks, but said nothing about not being able to clean carpet that was grey around a bed from four months of use. The bed was only temporary so it was important to us to get the carpet in that room very clean-looking.
Without checking reviews here or on Kudzu, I went with his services. (Will I never learn?) Positives: clearly non-toxic substances used during the carpet cleaning, pleasant smell, carpet only slightly damp afterwards, work was done quickly, carpet is free of contaminants (though it doesn't look new again), good responsiveness when I complained that the carpet had not been cleaned adequately. Larry, the owner, came out to redo the room for me.
Negatives: not only was the wheelchair stain not removed, the area around where the bed was only marginally better; the cleaning process uses a fair amount of friction, which aged my carpet; and the first technician left me with at least an hour of work (vacuuming up the "sponges" he lay down over the problem areas that had not come clean). (Larry apologized profusely for that and said that shouldn't have happened.)
After Larry basically redid the whole room for me and could only lift the stains a bit more, he shared that he couldn't get his own bedroom 100% clean in the high traffic areas, and that no carpet cleaning company could. That might be true, but I think I will try another company next time. I think he should have told me this BEFORE I hired him to do the work--he had ample opportunity to do so, and I had clearly said the stain around the bed was the main reason for our having the room done. Unfortunately, we will have to live with the stains for now, since we already sunk $125 into the cleaning.
After he had taken time to redo the room, I did not feel free to ask for a refund; I just decided to share my experience here and alert others to potential problems. And the carpet is at least sanitized (I hope), so we feel confident playing with our child on it.
