Absolutely horrible. What was supposed to be a decent deal ended up being a waste of a plane trip and lost work because of an unscrupulous businessman trying to majorly rip me off. I first called Flooring Zone after finding a supposed deal on Groupon for $100 for $500 toward the cost of installing new flooring (which surprisingly is still listed on their website months later; don’t even bother trying to use). I spoke with Chris Cheney, the owner, and told him I was thinking of purchasing the Groupon deal even though I had a pretty small job (about 300 square feet) and that I was looking to use specific flooring I planned to purchase from another source. Mr. Cheney told me those conditions were fine, and that I could still apply a Groupon deal. Based on these assurances, I then scheduled an appt. for a formal measure and final quote and I literally booked a plane ticket to Atlanta, where I reside part-time, just for this and made a special trip for it. Needless to say, based on my initial call to Mr. Cheney, I expected his quote to be roughly within the same price range of other A-rated flooring businesses I had called for general ball-park estimates of removing carpet and installing hardwood with the specific conditions I was seeking. My appt. with Mr. Cheney was scheduled for 11am. The problems began when, even by 11:20am, Mr. Cheney had neither shown up nor called me to inform me he was running late. When I called him at 11:20, he told me was sorry and that he was supposedly about to pick up the phone and call me. The reason he gave for the delay (in coming and in even calling) was a lot stranger (if funnier, at first) than a dog eating homework: that he had spent the morning chasing a llama around the neighborhood. Although he later explained how the heck he’d encountered such a situation (supposedly a petting zoo from a child’s birthday party the prior day), that wasn’t exactly good enough to explain why he couldn’t have called me to inform of his delay. He ultimately arrived nearly two hours after our scheduled appt. time. He was arrogant, telling me how his company has supposedly serviced so many major organizations around Atlanta. He also mentioned that he was using the Groupon as a tool for advertising. (If his company was in such demand, as he suggested, not sure why he’d need that type of extra advertising.) If this wasn’t bad enough, when Mr. Cheney finally emailed me a “quote” several hours later, he sent me only a general quote with nothing itemized or broken down. The final quote he gave me—$1700—was over $500 more than the average total multiple other flooring companies had quoted me for the same services/specifications. Even though he gave me no specific breakdown whatsoever in the final quote—itself problematic—he had clearly marked it up by more than the value of the Groupon deal I’d been trying to use. Mr. Cheney and the Flooring Zone proved to be highly unscrupulous, and is condescending to customers who he seems to think wouldn’t know any better. Mr. Cheney, if you didn’t think the smaller flooring job in my apt. was worth a Groupon discount, then you should have simply said so up front and not wasted people’s time (and money) trying to deceive them!!! Just on the same floor in my building, two neighbors have re-done their flooring since then, and you could imagine that I certainly advised them against your company based on my beyond horrible experience. If you keep treating potential (or established) customers like this, word will get around, and you may sooner than you expect will find you’re unable to host petting-zoo birthday parties for your kids.
