The first occurrence I was asking for the thermostat for an electric oven to resolve my problem.  The woman I was talking to suggested checking the heating element for abnormalities.  I did that and was able to purchase the correct part and it fixed the problem.
The second occurrence I was asking for a gas valve based on mt assessment of theproblem,  and was advised to purchase an igniter instead as the symptoms indicated a different problem.  I purchased the igniter and it resolved my problem right away.
Both times I was asking for parts I thought would resolve my problem, and they pointed me in the right direction, saving me much time, heartache, and money.
