We called customer service several times for assistance and were treated rudely by under trained employees. The promises they made were never met. When we tried to cancel the contract we were told that we needed to pay an additional $600 in addition to the $417 install fee in order to exit the agreement, despite the lack of service.
I then called the ADT 800 number. A service rep sent me to the basement in search of the electrical plug for the beige system box. Though I had no problem finding the box, I could not find an electrical plug in for it. He then sent me out to the garage to look for a circuit breaker, telling me that the alarm would not go off when I went out the kitchen door since the keypad was malfunctioning.
While I was flipping circuit breaker switches, the phone cut off and the alarm began sounding loudly, waking up the rest of the family. My son came downstairs with the alarm blaring, in the dark, as I had cut off all electricity to the house while following the ADT rep's directions. I called back to ADT on my cell phone and went through a series of directions from a second rep who didn't know anything about the first call. Eventually I managed to turn everything off.
The second rep said it was a malfunction of the keypad but did not offer to walk through any diagnostic on the phone or any remote service. She only offered to send out a technician for $150 for the first 30 minutes and something like $35 for each additional 15 minutes. (I may be slightly off on those numbers since I did not have a pad and pen handy while running around the house talking with her on the cell phone.)
I explained that we have been customers for 18 years, that service has deteriorated ever since ADT took over, that we have had several disruptive malfunctions in the past year, and that I had been thinking for the past year about going to a competitor. I did not get the impression that they care at all.
After this experience I went to Angie's List and started checking ratings of home security companies. This one is hardly a star.
After 18 years (15 with Brinks/Broadview and 3 with ADT), I am leaving this conglomerate that obviously does not give a toot about my business.
