Handyman Service
Then he was supposed to remove the old gutter and reinstall with a custom made galvanized gutter with no more than one seam, fix the damaged roof shingles, replace any rotten wood, replace ceiling tiles, and insulation and reinstall flashing properly to repair a roof leak. This work was supposed to cost no more than $4040.00. $1040 of that was for a custom gutter (9.5" x 3.5" x 11.5") We gave him $1500 up front to order this and other supplies. He came and tore out our old gutter, put in the new, said he put new shingles, flashing, etc. During the process, he or his son through trash off the roof hitting our pickup truck and damaging a new paint job ($800 worth). The next day it rained and there was a huge mess. All the ceiling tile, insulation, etc. fell down. He admitted it was his fault, said he would make it right, said he had ordered the wrong size gutter, etc. Said he needed another $1000 to reorder the gutter. We were desperate because rain was coming in the whole 60 plus feet and much damage to the house was being done. He came back with another gutter in 6 pieces, not 2, and started putting that in. During the process he dropped his hammer in the pool, chipping it in two places, causing more hundreds of dollars of damage. When he was leaving we noticed that the gutter he had pulled out was a normal, house size, 5 inch aluminum gutter, rather than the custom size we had paid for. His latest fix, was lower in the center, rather than higher, making the water pool in the center rather than drain out the downspounts. The joints all had gaps of as much as 3/4 inch and he had used gobs of ordinary bathroom type siclicone caulking rather than the kind that would hold up for roof use. So of course immediately it rained again and even more catastrophic damage was incurred. At this point, we terminated our agreement. But, he had gotten $2775 out of us and made a small leak turn into enormous expense to repair. It is going to cost us over $15,000 to fix up what he had done. Nearly everything he had agreed to in our confirmation letter, he did NOT do. Nothing that he told us turned out to be the truth. He did not replace the shingles, but used the old ones, leaving us with hundreds (literatlly) of holes in the shingles with nails sticking up all over. He said he ordered a custom gutter the first time, but did not. The second time he did order one, but not the correct size or configuration so it still did not work. He did not put flashing under the edges of the roof and over the gutter as he said he did. He turned the cover over the gutter upside down, causing the water to be diverted into the house instead of the gutter. Part of his agreement had been to leave that cover design alone as it had a purpose.
