We contacted this provider for two reasons: (1) when we tried to start a fire, smoke came back into the house, and (2) our gas starter did not work.
First, Ian fixed our gas problem by turning on the gas line under the house (which required creeping quite some distance through our crawlspace!) and by extracting and replacing the metal gas burner, which he replaced with a brand-new one (included in the cost of the service).
Once the gas starter was working, Ian showed us how to start the fire to prevent smoke blowback and how to stop blowback if it did happen. He explained how to operate the fireplace. He went over basic fireplace safety. He inspected our chimney from the house and from the roof.
Scheduling was easy and Ian arrived exactly on time, even calling about thirty minutes before he arrived. Ian was polite, professional, and well-spoken throughout the service. He even offered to help us move our furniture back into place afterwards!
We were very satisfied with the quality of the service, which will allow us to enjoy our fireplace this winter season :)

WONDERFUL and Honest! Called Jim to schedule quote after watching his video on-line regarding rain pans. He explained the bracing system that he installs on the chimney to prevent the rain pan from being pushed down and holding water. He sent his son Ian to give the quote. I was a little nervous because he is young . But Jim assured me that Ian was a certified chimney professional and had been working with him for years. Once I met Ian, all concern was gone. He is very professional, knowledgeable and thorough. He measured the chimney, installed the brace system, ordered the rain pan. He made sure that that pan had a larger lip to divert the water away from the chimney and their pan comes down further on the side of chimney. Cleaned the fireplace and chimney and left the inside of my home very clean. Came back in a week to install the new rain pan. The pan comes in black, but I wanted it white to match the siding. No problem, Ian painted it white.
Before installation, Jim called me and said that the balance was incorrect that I owed less money that the discount for the chimney cleaning was not applied. HOW many companies will call you and say You don't owe us as much money. I wouldn't have known the difference.
This week (October 24, 2011) I had a roofing company out for roof maintenance, and their technician commented "somebody did a great job on the new rain pan" and wanted to know who had installed it.

Jim at Chimney Service Co was responsive, honest, informative and fairly priced. He explained what we has doing every step of the way and offered options for us to consider. He offered a generic and extended warranty for his work. He started as stated and finished as estimated. There were no hidden additional charges. I would recommend his leaning chimney service to anyone.

Jim's a nice guy and very thorough in his approach, but as a one man shop he does have a lot on his plate (I would be surprised if you called and he picked up immediately). He did mention that he might run late on our Monday meeting (and he did), but I had hoped to get a call in the morning as he saw his day unfold. Anyway, when he got there, Jim promptly got to work. Starting with a thorough inspection of the chimney cap, he worked down the chimney. After determining the probable site of the leak, he next put a hose on the roof and proceeded to soak various areas while I was in the attic looking for leaks. A pretty straight forward way to approach the problem (and one that you can obviously do on your own if you don't mind getting up on the roof and have someone who can assist you inside). Ultimately the leak was pinpointed to missing mortar between bricks just above the roof flashing. Thorough caulking of the area and the job was done. Now at $120/hour, I would strongly suggest that you have everything ready for him before he arrives. Billable time seems to start the moment his truck stops, so don't fool around or you will be out $2 per minute.

The Chimney Service Company does a good job, especially with making sure soot does not end up everywhere. They were pleasant and thorough. They found the loose flashing and only had to replace a small portion of it to fix it properly. I had no complaints and would recommend their services to others.

Mr. McPherson anwered all my questions and was very pleasant. He was late for the appointment, but called to let us know. He doesn't rush and was very thorough. I'm looking forward to using my fireplace.

CHARGES $80 AN HOUR. JIM MCPHERSON IS CREATIVE AND HONEST. MY DAMPER WAS RUSTED OUT AND HE CAME UP WITH A VERY COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO PREVENT DRAFTS COMING FROM THE FIREPLACE. HE ONLY WANTED $30 FOR HIS WORK, BUT I APPRECIATED HIS HONESTY SO MUCH THAT I INSISTED HE TAKE $80.
